#9 "ANOTHER PLATE"  by Half-Meant

[Opening] "The ending was better before." "You haven't reached it yet." "Exactly." [Part 1] Your shoes live under the bench. Mine have moved to the other side. I stopped asking which cup was yours. I set another plate out before you asked. We bought a second towel. It dries beside mine. [Refrain] Another plate. Leave it there. [Part 2] You tell the story three different ways. I like the wrong one best. You say, "That isn't how it happened." Then start again before the food arrives. Rain stops sometime after lunch. We notice when the room gets bright. [Part 3] Your ticket curls beneath the sugar bowl. We move it when we wipe the table. You use all the hot water. I call you a thief. You pass me the towel like that settles it. [Refrain] Another plate. I'll wash it later. [Part 4] The orange you saved for me is gone by midnight. You say you forgot. I give you the last piece of bread. "Was that mine?" "It is now." [Coda] One plate left to dry. The tap keeps dripping. You start another story.
