In the original, a grieving lover returns as a ghost to ride his beloved home one last time, leaving her handkerchief on his corpse as proof – a haunting tale of love that defies death and class barriers. The ancient story has been brought into the present day: secret love in a small town, a father who tears the lovers apart, a boy who dies of heartbreak, and a midnight ride where the dead return to keep a promise. The scarf remains the key piece of evidence, just as in the old ballad. At its core, this is also a vanishing hitchhiker story – the classic urban myth of the mysterious passenger who disappears, leaving a token behind. The ghostly intimacy and sorrow have been preserved, while the narrative is told from the dead lover's perspective to make the grief feel immediate and personal. A quiet nod to the centuries-old tradition of folk ballads that continue to remind us: love does not end at the grave, and sometimes the dead still have something to say. We loved in secret, lights turned low Your dad said "No" and sent you far I broke in pieces, slow and slow Now I'm just cold beneath the stars We met behind the store at night Your laugh was soft, your hand was warm You said "Don't leave a trace of us" So we held on in quiet storms Your father heard and slammed the door He packed your bag, he paid the ride I watched the taillights fade to black Got sick with missing you inside One midnight knock, your window creaked My voice you knew said "Come with me" I stood outside, pale as a sheet "Drive home tonight, love, set you free" We drove out hard through dark and rain My breath came sharp, my head in pain I said "My head won't quit, it's bad" You tied your scarf, I kissed you sad I set you down by your front gate "Go in" I said "don't make it late" You shook your dad "He brought me home" We dug my grave, your scarf still on We loved in secret, lights turned low They tried to break it, sent you far Love never dies, it came to show A father cried beneath the stars Beneath the stars... (Beneath the stars...)
