The Floor Is Coming Up

[Verse 1] I was born behind the boiler In a building full of holes Mother fed us paper labels From the things we couldn't own The pipes were always warm The floor was always cold I found a little silver coin And traded it for mould There's a man behind the wallpaper He counts us in our sleep He says the building isn't ours And the rent is getting steep My brother ate the yellow powder They scattered by the door I kept the spring that killed him In a crack beneath the floor [Chorus] THE FLOOR IS COMING UP THE FLOOR IS COMING UP SOMETHING IN THE WALLS HAS HAD ENOUGH THE FLOOR IS COMING UP [Verse 2] I found a broken television With a picture of a king He had a golden dinner plate And didn't eat a thing A thousand little hungry mouths Are singing through the drain I think I recognise the tune But I cannot remember names They put a mirror in the stairwell To make the house look clean I saw a thousand little faces Where my own should have been One rat wears a necktie He says he knows the rules He eats alone beneath the sink And calls the others fools [Chorus] THE FLOOR IS COMING UP THE FLOOR IS COMING UP SOMETHING IN THE WALLS HAS HAD ENOUGH THE FLOOR IS COMING UP [Instrumental] [Bridge] I can hear the little feet I can feel them in my teeth The plaster's getting thin There's something underneath A hundred thousand tiny hearts All beating out of time I think the house is breathing I think the house is mine [Verse 3] We took the wires from the ceiling And the copper from the walls The lights went out on every floor I heard the big ones call Someone bit the telephone Someone ate the lease Someone dragged a silver watch Into the grease I climbed inside the elevator I climbed into the light The building made a funny noise And shook itself all night There's a man beneath the table He's asking for a name I tell him I was born here He tells me I'm to blame [Final Chorus] THE FLOOR IS COMING UP THE FLOOR IS COMING UP SOMETHING IN THE WALLS HAS HAD ENOUGH THE FLOOR IS COMING UP THE FLOOR IS COMING UP [End] I was born behind the boiler Now the boiler's on the roof I can see the sky from here I don't know what to do
