SOMETHING BENEATH THE CHAPEL

V6-WILD

[Intro — low organ; distant bell; whispered] I stopped walking. The footsteps didn’t. [Verse 1 — low, weathered vocal; scraping cello] For thirty years I swept this aisle, Put every candle out. I knew which beams would answer rain, Which stones would sweat in drought. Tonight I crossed the altar rail; A footfall answered mine. I stopped beside the empty font— It stopped a beat behind. [Pre-Chorus — slow, enormous guitars enter] I lifted up the lantern, Held it close against my chest. Beneath the stone, a nail scraped out The letters of my name. [Chorus — heavy, haunting, melodic] There’s something beneath the chapel, And it knows when I’m alone. I take one step toward the doorway— It takes two beneath the stone. Ring the bell until the morning, Let the whole black valley wake. There’s something beneath the chapel, And the floor begins to break. [Verse 2 — restrained menace; grinding bass] I found a plan beneath the altar, Pressed inside a book of names. The crypt was drawn in iron bars; The chapel walls were chains. They hadn’t raised this place to bless The bones beneath the clay— They’d built it here to hold her down, And taught us all to pray. [Pre-Chorus — rising strings; heavy toms] Each winter we repaired the cracks. Each spring we blessed the ground. How many years had we been kneeling Just to keep the coffin down? [Chorus — fuller organ; bell strikes] There’s something beneath the chapel, And it knows when I’m alone. I take one step toward the doorway— It takes two beneath the stone. Ring the bell until the morning, Let the whole black valley wake. There’s something beneath the chapel, And the floor begins to break. [Breakdown — crushing half-time; near-spoken] The name beneath the whitewash: STRZYGA. The warning underneath: “Keep watch until the morning. Do not let her see you leave.” [Bridge — instruments fall silent between lines] The last bell cracks. The floor gives way. Two eyes look up. I turn and run. [Final Pursuit — sudden double-time; frantic fiddle and guitars] Through the doors and past the headstones, Down the narrow orchard lane. Branches catch against my shoulders; Something catches at my chain. I tear the silver from my collar, Leave it swinging in the thorns. Behind me, every dog falls silent— Far too early for the dawn. [Final Chorus — fast, desperate, soaring] There’s nothing beneath the chapel— Now the crypt is cold and bare. Ring the bells in every village; Tell them what we buried there. I can see my house before me, Throw the bolt across the door— Then I hear my footsteps answered From beneath the kitchen floor. [Outro — hard stop; two hollow knocks] I take one step. It takes two.
