Hesitation Blues (Traditional - Reimagined)
[Voice: Male bari-tenor, G2–E4. Warm, weathered Appalachian blues storyteller with a sly, playful edge. Traditional sections relaxed and conversational. Rap sections witty, rhythmic and reflective, never aggressive.] [Verse 1] I got those hesitation blues, They're hanging on my mind. I don't know if I should stay, And I don't know what I might find. I could settle down and love you, Or keep wandering down the line. I got those hesitation blues, And they're stealing all my time. [Chorus] Should I stay or should I go? Should I stay or should I go? My heart says yes, My head says no. That's the way these blues can grow. [Verse 2] I asked my baby, “Do you love me?” She said, “Well, I think I do.” I said, “Baby, that's an answer That don't tell me much about you.” She said, “Love ain't always certain, And certainty ain't love.” Now I'm sitting here wondering What either one is made of. [Rap 1] That's the trouble with a heart. It don't come with instructions. No owner's manual, No map for reconstruction. You want a guarantee? Good luck with that. Love's a leap in the dark And you don't know where you land. We want forever Before we risk tomorrow. We want certainty Before we deal with sorrow. But sometimes “I don't know” Is the truest thing you hear. And sometimes one more step Is how you make it clear. [Verse 3] I met a girl down in Georgia, She had a smile like summer rain. She said, “Come along and stay with me.” I said, “Girl, I might just do the same.” Then I thought about the road ahead And all the roads behind. I packed my bag three different times And changed my foolish mind. [Chorus] Should I stay or should I go? Should I stay or should I go? My heart says yes, My head says no. That's the way these blues can grow. [Verse 4] You can't hold onto yesterday While chasing tomorrow too. You can't keep every open door And still know what to do. Sometimes you've got to choose a road, Even knowing you might fall. A life spent waiting for a sign Isn't much of a life at all. [Rap 2] That's hesitation talking: “Wait a little longer.” “Maybe something better's coming.” “Maybe you'll get stronger.” Meanwhile the clock keeps ticking Like it don't care what you choose. You can spend your whole life Trying not to lose. Fear says, “Don't move.” Pride says, “Don't bend.” Love says, “Take the chance.” Doubt says, “What if?” That's the argument inside us. That's the blues beneath the blues. Sometimes you ain't scared of losing. You're scared of having to choose. [Bridge] So I'll take the road before me. I don't know where it will end. Maybe I'll find somebody. Maybe I'll find myself instead. And if I make a wrong turn, I'll learn something on the way. Better than standing still forever, Waiting for a perfect day. [Rap 3] Nobody gets certainty. Nobody gets the whole design. You make the best choice you can With the little you can find. You love somebody. You let somebody go. You lose a little. You learn a little. That's the way the river flows. Maybe that's the secret: You don't have to know it all. Sometimes courage isn't knowing. Sometimes courage is answering the call. [Final Chorus] Should I stay or should I go? Well, I think I'm gonna go. My heart says yes, My head says no, But my feet already know. Should I stay or should I go? I've spent too long deciding so. Maybe love ain't knowing where. Maybe love is simply going there. [Outro] I got those hesitation blues, But they don't worry me. I'll make up my mind tomorrow. Tonight I'll let it be.
