[Intro – Spoken over groove] (Clara Jean): Mmm-hmm… He said forever, girls. (Darlene & Lottie): He said forever! (Clara Jean): Then he said… goodbye. (All): Ooooh yeah! [Verse 1] He came around on a Sunday mornin’, Smile so sweet it could stop the rain. Told me, “Darlin’, you’re my only,” Then left me standin’ in the pain. Said he’d build me a world of sunshine, Now it’s shadows and teardrops fallin’— How could “forever” fade so fast, When his love came and went callin’? [Chorus – Call & Response] (Lead: Clara Jean) He said forever! (Backups) Then he said goodbye! (Lead) He said forever! (Backups) Made this poor girl cry! (Lead) Told me dreams don’t fade, (Backups) But dreams can lie… (All) He said forever, then he said goodbye! [Verse 2] I wore his ring for a week and a day, Showed it off like a shining star. Now I keep it in a dresser drawer, Right beside my broken heart. He used to call me “angel baby,” Now the phone just don’t ring no more. I danced through love, but the music stopped— He walked right out the door! [Chorus – Call & Response] (Lead) He said forever! (Backups) Then he said goodbye! (Lead) He said forever! (Backups) Left me high and dry! (Lead) Said he’d never leave, (Backups) But that’s a lie… (All) He said forever, then he said goodbye! [Bridge] Maybe someday he’ll come to see, What his goodbye did to me. But when he does, I’ll be long gone— Dancin’ to a brand-new song! [Breakdown – Band hits & handclaps] (Clara Jean): Forever! (Backups): Forever! (Clara Jean): He said forever! (Backups): Then he said goodbye! (Clara Jean): Oh, he said forever! (All): Then he said goodbye! [Final Chorus] (Lead) He said forever! (Backups) Then he said goodbye! (Lead) He said forever! (Backups) Made this poor girl cry! (Lead) Love don’t last on a lullaby— (All) He said forever… then he said goodbye! [Outro – Fade] (Call & response repeating ad libs) “Forever, forever…” “Goodbye, goodbye…” “Oh, he said forever—then he said goodbye…”
