Proverbs 13 The Teaching of the Wise

A wise son heeds his father’s discipline: but a scoffer doesn’t hear reprimand. From the fruit of man’s mouth he will eat good: but the soul of the faithless will eat violence. He that watches his mouth protects his life: but he that opens his big mouth comes to ruin. His lazy soul desires, and has nothing: but the souls of the diligent will become prosperous. A righteous man hates lying: but a wicked man is vile and shameful. Charity will guard him who’s way is upright: but wickedness corrupts the sinner. Some pretend to be rich, yet have nothing: others pretend to be poor, yet have great wealth. A man’s wealth may ransom his life: but the poor get no threats. The light of the righteous rejoices: but the lamp of the wicked will die out. Only by insolence comes strife: but wisdom is with those who take advice. Wealth gained by vanity will be diminished: but those who gather by hard work will increase. Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but desire realized is a tree of life. Whoever scorns a word will be destroyed: but those who reveres a commandment will be rewarded. The Teaching of the wise is a source of life, to avoid the traps of death. Good sense gives grace: but the way of faithless is hard. Every cautious person acts with knowledge: but a fool broadcasts his foolishness. The wicked messenger falls into evil: but a faithful ambassador will bring healing. Poverty and shame will befall him that refuses instruction: but he that heeds correction will be honored. The desire realized is sweet to the soul: but it is an abomination to fools to turn from evil. He that walks with the wise will grow wise: but a companion of fools ends up hurt. Evil pursues sinners: but to the righteous good will be rewarded. A good person leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren: and the wealth of a sin is stored up for the righteous. Much food grows from the furrows of the poor: but it is swept away for lack of justice. He that spares his staff hates his son: but he that loves him disciplines him in his youth. The righteous eats to satisfy his soul: but the stomach of the wicked will always be empty. A wise son heeds his father’s discipline: but a scoffer doesn’t hear reprimand.
