[INTRO — 0:00–0:16] I swear that crawdad ain't said a word all morning... Just sittin' there polishin' one claw on a rock. Then I mentioned the sheriff. He blinked twice. Now I don't like him. [VERSE 1] He got one claw polished, the other clenched tight Sittin' on a rock in the pale moonlight I dropped my line, he didn't move an inch Just tapped that shell like, "Boy... you snitch?" I said, "You talkin' to me?" He bubbled real slow Then drew me a map where the dark water flows He circled one spot, then looked at me Like I already knew what I was supposed to see I said, "What happened down there?" He clicked his claw Then scratched in the mud: "I know what you saw." [HOOK] That crawdad knows too much, don't trust the hush He seen things glowin' in the old reed brush Shake that pot, stir that mud But don't let that crawdad know too much That crawdad knows too much, Lord have mercy Little red claws got the whole swamp nervous I said, "Who told you?" He said, "The mud." Then disappeared. [RAP 1] Lil' crustacean conspiracy expert deluxe Click-clack Morse code in the swamp dust He saw that moss thing run barefoot through the reeds Arguin' with a heron over some jar of light beads He knows the moonshine recipe Knows what I did Knows the password Knows where I hid Knows every bad dream that I had last year Knows why the sheriff won't come anywhere near I said, "How in the hell do you know all this stuff?" He tapped out "RUN" Then tapped twice more Like apparently that wasn't enough [VERSE 2] He pointed at the cypress and nodded his head Then told me, "Go say hello to the Possum instead" I said, "Which Possum?" He just clicked his claw Like everybody knows the Possum I saw Then he vanished beneath the water Didn't splash Didn't dive Just gone Now every ripple makes me jump when it moves Every frog in the swamp looks like it knows the news My shadow asked me, "What you gonna do?" I said, "Leave." It said, "He already knew." [RAP 2] Crusty little swamp narc, driftwood informant Sittin' in the mud like a government consultant He told me I ain't crazy Just partially awake Said the river keeps receipts For every dumb mistake I said, "You know the future?" Click. "You know the past?" Click-click. "You know what's gonna happen to me?" Long pause. Then a frog behind me said, "Everybody." I turned around. Ain't nobody there. [FINAL HOOK] That crawdad knows too much, don't speak his name He unspools truth from the swamp's blue flame Sip slow, hush hush You don't argue with crustacean knowledge That crawdad knows too much, don't look too long He knows where you've been and where you don't belong Shake that pot, stir that mud Pray that crawdad don't tell nobody what he knows That crawdad knows too much... And he knows about you. [OUTRO — whispered] If that crawdad tells the Lizard Man... I'm movin'. North. South. Canada. ...He just crawled past my window. Carrying a suitcase. I think he's movin' too.
