I Won’t Go Missing From Me
I used to feel the word “no” rise behind my teeth Then change my answer halfway so nobody would leave I’d rehearse an apology before I’d done a thing I got so good at being easy, I forgot what I meant I thought being easy to love meant needing less Till my own voice sounded like somebody else I won’t go missing from me Not to make somebody stay I won’t edit every truth Till there’s nothing left to say If my hands shake, let them shake If I need you, I’ll speak I can need somebody close And not go missing from me Now I catch the automatic “I’m fine” before it lands Yesterday I said, “No, I can’t,” and let that answer stand The silence after felt enormous; I waited for the blame Then morning came, and I was still here, still inside my name Now truth can shake and still be true I can reach for you and still know where I end I won’t go missing from me Not to make somebody stay I won’t edit every truth Till there’s nothing left to say If my hands shake, let them shake If I need you, I’ll speak I can need somebody close And not go missing from me The first time I said, “Stay with me, I don’t want to do this alone,” My voice broke on the last word I almost swallowed it whole But needing you was not surrender And the room did not collapse I heard myself tell the truth And for once, I didn’t take it back I won’t go missing from me Even when I ask you to stay I won’t edit every truth Till there’s nothing left to say Let my hands shake, let them shake You can hear the whole of me I can love, I can be loved And not go missing from me This time, when I hear myself, I answer. I won’t go missing from me.
