[Instrumental Intro] [Verse 1] You come through the doorway With your hat in hand You try the lower peg Then turn to where I stand The brim taps your shoulder We both look up and grin I point toward the higher hook You try that one again [Chorus] Put the hat on the peg A little higher now Let the brim clear your coat We finally work it out Put the hat on the peg Leave room for your scarf We take a step back And both begin to laugh [Verse 2] You lift it by the ribbon I keep your scarf aside The brim clears your shoulder You turn from side to side Your sleeve brushes mine You check it once again The hat stays where you put it We laugh beside the peg [Chorus] Put the hat on the peg A little higher now Let the brim clear your coat We finally work it out Put the hat on the peg Leave room for your scarf We take a step back And both begin to laugh [Instrumental Interlude] [Bridge] You fold the scarf in half I move a pair of shoes You hang it by the hat Then turn to find your gloves One glove is in your pocket The other in your hand You catch my eye and smile I laugh at where we stand [Final Chorus] Put the hat on the peg A little higher now Let the brim clear your coat We finally work it out Put the hat on the peg Leave room for your scarf We take a step back And both begin to laugh [Instrumental Outro]
