MERCY 019 – The Quiet Covenant | The Mercy

(Verse 1) They built their homes below the hill and barred the eastern gate, Where every tool was known by hand and nothing grew too great. Their fields were kept in measured rows, their granaries dry from rain, And every child received a place, a lesson and their grain. (Verse 2) They silenced every distant call and pulled the long-range wire, Then broke the largest engines down and fed their parts to fire. They taught that old-world hunger rose wherever power stood tall, And safety lived in smaller hands behind a living wall. (Chorus) Is choosing less the road of care, or fear made stern and wise? Does caution guard the children, or put shutters on their eyes? Their houses stand, their harvest holds, their people labour free, But every gate they will not open hides what they refuse to see. (Verse 3) The travellers called them cowards, though their youngest all were fed, And no one froze beyond the gate while grain remained and bread. Their elders shared the water work and counted every chair, Yet judged each wish for wider roads as proof of hidden snare. (Verse 4) The Afterborn began to ask how far a life might grow, And whether keeping danger out meant keeping all they know. A boundary built to shelter them could harden to a cage, Where every unborn choice was bound by one surviving age. (Chorus) Is choosing less the road of care, or fear made stern and wise? Does caution guard the children, or put shutters on their eyes? Their houses stand, their harvest holds, their people labour free, But every gate they will not open hides what they refuse to see. (Bridge) They marked the size of every House and called the limit fear, Then blessed the quiet boundaries that held them year by year. But wisdom turns to cruelty when no one finds the door, And safety becomes prison when the living may not ask for more. (Outro) The Quiet Covenant keeps its fields in careful, tended ground, While distant radios call through dark to worlds beyond their bound. Perhaps their chosen smallness is the reason they remain, Or merely one more guarded road that learned to love its chain.
