The Lantern in Black Hollow (October Artist Showcase)
[Verse 1] The moon hung low on a crooked pine ridge, Cold wind rattled through the weeds, Old folks warned us 'bout Black Hollow Road, Where the dead still walk at Halloween. Me and my brother dared each other, Past the graveyard gate at ten, Laughing loud to hide our shaking, Never thinking we'd come back changed men. [Pre-Chorus] Then we saw a lantern glowing, Far beyond the churchyard stones, And a voice came through the darkness, Calling softly, "Come back home..." [Chorus] Run, run, don't turn around, Something's moving underground, Branches claw and shadows crawl, Hear the midnight spirits call. Run, run, through the fog below, Past the creek where no grass grows, But the lantern follows everywhere, In the haunted Hollow air. [Verse 2] Down the path we found an old house, Rotten boards and shattered glass, Dusty portraits watched us breathing, As footsteps echoed in the hall we passed. Then the lantern floated through the doorway, Not a hand to hold its flame, And behind it stood a pale-eyed woman, Whispering each of our names. [Pre-Chorus] Her smile split like broken branches, Her eyes burned silver in the night, Then she pointed toward the staircase, Where something moved without a light. [Chorus] Run, run, don't turn around, Something's moving underground, Branches claw and shadows crawl, Hear the midnight spirits call. Run, run, through the fog below, Past the creek where no grass grows, But the lantern follows everywhere, In the haunted Hollow air. [Bridge] At the top we found a journal, Buried underneath the floor, Every Halloween a traveler vanished, Never seen again no more. Then the final page was written, Fresh as if that very day: "Two boys entered Black Hollow... And one of them will stay." [Breakdown] The lantern died... The house went still... My brother screamed... From over the hill... I ran alone through the graveyard, Heart pounding like a drum, But when I reached the edge of town, I realized he'd never come. [Final Chorus] Run, run, don't turn around, Something's moving underground, Branches claw and shadows crawl, Hear the midnight spirits call. Run, run, hear the widow sing, Beneath the dead October wind, And every Halloween they swear, A second lantern's glowing there... [Outro] So if you walk Black Hollow Road, When autumn paints the leaves blood red, And you see two lanterns in the darkness... Keep walking... They're counting heads.
