Act 2 scene 12: “Hosanna / Not That Kind of King”
[Characters: • CROWD – Euphoric, rhythmic, celebratory • DISCIPLES – Hyped, believing the moment is here • JESUS – Quiet, centered, burdened • ENSEMBLE – Adds texture, contrast, and echoes] ⸻ [CROWD – energetic chant over drums and tambourine] Hosanna! Hosanna! Make way in the street! The King is coming— Lay palms at His feet! He’s riding a donkey But He walks like flame He healed the broken Now they shout His name! ⸻ [DISCIPLES – joining in, confident and excited] This is it! This is now! The city’s ours, we hear them shout! No more hiding, no more wait— They’re throwing down at every gate! We saw the sick rise, the demons fall Now the people crown Him, once and for all! ⸻ [CROWD – layered refrain] Blessed is He who comes in the name! Hosanna! Hosanna! Lift up His flame! ⸻ [JESUS – deep male voice, voice calm, quiet melody over the noise] They sing like they see Me But they don’t know why They cry out for triumph But I hear goodbye They wave for a warrior But I ride for peace They praise for a throne But I walk toward grief ⸻ [CROWD – volume builds] Hosanna in the highest! Let the kingdom rise! Shake the gates of heaven! Open up the skies! ⸻ [JESUS – deep male voice intensifies, still controlled] I’m not that kind of king Not here to kill Not here to rule by force or will No war horse, no blade, no gold Just truth too heavy for hearts to hold ⸻ [CROWD – still roaring] He’s the one! Lift Him high! Let the Romans tremble, let the old ways die! ⸻ [JESUS deep male voice– final verse, firm and low] I’ll wear a crown, but it won’t shine It’ll bleed down wood when they say “He’s mine” Let them shout now, while they still can sing But they don’t know what kind of king I bring ⸻ [ENSEMBLE – soft blend, haunting outro under fading crowd chant] They called for glory But He brought grace They cheered His name But missed His face Not that kind of king… Not that kind of king…
