Sock Town

V6

[Intro: music box, hum] [Soft, nylon guitar] Sock town's door is a hurt in our hall wall, big as a hand and a bit of a wrist. Past it, a pin for a lamp post, a jar lid for a pond, a button for a moon, lint for cots, toast crumbs for roads. Mama hung a photo on top, all of us smiling, so Dad won't find it. Sock town has a list. [Piano joins] Only small socks go, my pink and my stripy, only Mama's go, thin and gray with a dot. Dad's stay in rows, black and long, six pairs, always six. Sock-folk only pick what's soft. Dad's boots stomp a lot. [Hook] Hush now, hush, that's sock town calling, wool and cotton, softly falling (hush, hush). Half a pair is still a pair if it's warm and if it's hid. Odd sock, odd sock, don't you fuss, sock town has a bunk for us, and a bunk for Mama too. [Low, hush] Mama's in on it. I saw, past midnight, by our washing: a sock from its pair, a fold, a bag in our wall, back of our photo. A card with a tiny Mama on it, a roll of cash, Mama's ring, my baby tooth in foil. Sock-folk hoard what's small. Mama says hush, not a word to Dad. Dad would stamp it flat. Dad's boots don't know how to walk soft. [Chant, soft, hush] No pairs, no boots, no loud. No pairs, no boots, no loud. No pairs, no boots, no loud. [No drums, piano only] Mama shook my arm at four. Socks on my hands, coat on my pajamas. "Hush. Sock town's moving tonight. Hold this bag. No lights." Down our stairs, past a wall that's snoring, Mama pushing our car, not starting it till our road runs out. [Strings build] A buzz-in door. A lady with a clipboard and a kind sort of nod. A hall of bunks. A tub of odd socks for all of us. Six kids, all odd, all half of a pair. So this is sock town. I found it. Or it found us. [Hook, full band, big] Hush now, hush, that's sock town calling, wool and cotton, softly falling (hush, hush). Half a pair is still a pair if it's warm and if it's hid. Odd sock, odd sock, don't you fuss, sock town has a bunk for us, and a cot for Mama too. [Outro: music box] Dad's six pairs still stand in rows, black and long, in a room that isn't ours now. (no pairs, no boots, no loud) All of us odd. All of us odd.
