13.8 billion years ago, the universe was born, and hydrogen and helium came into being. Our Milky Way galaxy was formed about 10 billion years ago. Within the cores of the first generation of stars, atoms such as oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and iron were forged. Through supernova explosions, even heavier elements were created and scattered across the cosmos.
