The Last Cigarette Verse 1 The piano's down to its final chord The sax is sleeping, the bass is bored I've been nursing this drink for an hour or more And the only thing burning is the smoke I ignore Pre-chorus The bartender's wiping the same clean spot He knows my name but he asks me not Chorus The last cigarette - I let it burn No one to save me, no one to return The smoke curls up like a goodbye note In the blue, blue light of the afterglow Verse 2 I came here looking for a stolen kiss Now I'm just a ghost that the night will miss Every slow song was about someone else Now the only voice left is my own farewell Pre-chorus The jukebox is off, the neon is low Even the shadows are learning to go Chorus The last cigarette - I let it burn No one to save me, no one to return The smoke curls up like a goodbye note In the blue, blue light of the afterglow Bridge (instrumental: piano solo, sparse, 8 bars) Outro (spoken, almost to himself) Yeah… last one. Time to leave the light on for someone else.
