Is It Just Me?

[Opening thought • 4 bars] When I was young, I figured then You got the answers, turned to them. Now I’m the age they used to be. Is this what grown-ups felt like me? [Verse • 12 bars] I used to watch them talk in rooms, Their coffee cups, their workday shoes. Like every word had somewhere to land, Like somebody gave them the master plan. Now I’m the one who nods along, Says what I think and hopes I’m not wrong. I hear myself say, “Leave it with me.” Then stare at the screen like, “What does that mean?” I thought by now I’d feel the change, Wake up one day with a different brain. But I’m still here, just dressed the part, With a little more weight and the same old heart. [Building, thoughts piling up • 8 bars] Rent paid, tax forms, what’s this fee? Someone’s asking what I think we need. New hire, deadline, make that call. Do I sound like I know at all? Good shirt, firm grip, hold that stare. How much of confidence is what you wear? Say “of course,” say “let me see.” Are they all doing this like me? [Anthem • 12 bars] Is everybody making it up as they go? Saying “I’m sure” when they don’t really know? Looking for signs that are supposed to be there, Watching each other like somebody’s aware? Is everybody waiting to feel their age? Reading their lines from an unfinished page? Maybe they know something I can’t see. Or is everybody guessing like me? [Instrumental • 4 bars, looping vocal] Or is it just me? Is it just me? [Second thought • 12 bars] That guy at work never misses a beat. Does he go quiet alone in his seat? Replay a sentence the whole drive back? Think one wrong word let them see through the act? And all of my friends buying houses and rings, Do they feel ready for any of these things? Or lie there awake with a phone in their hand, Looking up things they should understand? Did Dad sit parked at the end of the day, Taking a breath before coming my way? I thought he knew how it all would turn out. Was I just too young to notice the doubt? [Breakdown • 8 bars] Some days I think I’m getting it right. Then one small thing keeps me up all night. How can I handle so much on my own And still want somebody to pick up the phone? Tell me the thing I’m supposed to do next. Tell me I haven’t missed some crucial step. Does everyone have that voice underneath? Does theirs get as loud when they’re trying to sleep? [Final lift • 16 bars] Is everybody making it up as they go? Saying “I’m sure” when they don’t really know? Looking for signs that are supposed to be there, Watching each other like somebody’s aware? Is everybody waiting to feel their age? Reading their lines from an unfinished page? Maybe they know something I can’t see. Or is everybody guessing like me? Maybe that pause before somebody speaks Is the same little panic that’s living in me. Maybe we’re all waiting on some guarantee. God, I hope it isn’t just me. [Outro • 4 bars] Alarm goes off. Get up. Get dressed. One more day of my best guess.
