Having left a bad past behind him, he is now taking his life into his own hands. He works at a tattoo parlor and is earning things that belong to him for the very first time. He believes he has his life under control—unaware of the things lurking out there in the darkness. [Intro – spoken] That one damn night. Why did I have to stop there? Who hangs around a quarry after dark? Me. Of course it was me. [Verse 1] I only wanted out, city lights from far away, Seville on the skyline, somewhere quiet for a change. There was a guy beside a Jeep, looked like he had the same idea, then a van rolled up behind us and the whole thing shifted gear. Three men stepped out and suddenly the air went tight, said we'd seen something that was never meant for our eyes. No clue what they meant, no time to work it through, the Jeep took the service road and somehow I went too. Dust behind the tires, potholes hitting hard, that Jeep was built for this, mine was waiting in the dark. We got out somehow, but one small detail stayed: My bike. My plate. Yeah. Great. [Hook] Don't ask who's a friend and who's against you, just ask how fast your legs can move. Don't ask which side you're standing on when you're stuck between the two. Don't ask what it costs to be there at the wrong damn place, the wrong damn time. The bill comes due at the end. Till then, everybody lies. [Verse 2] Now there are two sides and neither gives a name, everybody knows the rules, I'm supposed to guess the game. People ask me questions I can't answer if I try, and every half-truth handed over breeds another why. Worst part is, other people got dragged into the mess, people I was trying to keep well clear of all of this. I meant to keep it mine, deal with it alone, but trouble has a habit of following you home. Then a message from a number I had never seen before. Place. Time. “Come talk if you want answers.” And underneath, one sentence somehow made it worse: I'm not your enemy. Sure. Why doesn't that help? [Hook] Don't ask who's a friend and who's against you, just ask how fast your legs can move. Don't ask which side you're standing on when you're stuck between the two. Don't ask what it costs to be there at the wrong damn place, the wrong damn time. The bill comes due at the end. Till then, everybody lies. [Verse 3] Of course I went. What did you think I'd do? I've got too many questions to pretend I never knew. If you're tearing through my life, then tell me what it's for, I get to know who's after me and what they want me for. Walk in with ten questions, walk back out with twenty-five, every answer sounds like something built to keep the next one alive. Did I kick a hornet's nest, or dig beneath the floor, into some graveyard where the missing don't get names anymore? People disappear. Nobody asks for long. Maybe every answer's buried underneath that fucking stone. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. I'd love that to be true. Because if they ever catch me, maybe I'll finally find out where the missing people went too. [Break – spoken] And then the blond guy. Calm. Almost friendly. Hands me a number. “If you need help.” I look at it and think: This feels a lot like signing a contract before anybody writes down the price. [Final Hook] Don't ask who's a friend and who's against you, just ask how fast your legs can move. Don't ask which side you're standing on when you're stuck between the two. Don't ask what it costs to be there at the wrong damn place, the wrong damn time. The bill comes due at the end. And I'm starting to think somebody already knows what's mine. [Outro – spoken] My head still says: NO! FUCK! NO! Vampires aren't real. [Pause] And anyway... this shit doesn't sparkle.
