The Boy in the Iron Chair
[INTRO — dark lazy 4/4 | booming dreadnought low-string pulse | deep five-string bass | snare behind beat] [MINOR HARMONICA — thin sinister 1–♭3→4 phrase | simple, almost playful] [TELECASTER — dry ♭5 bend | STOP] Verse 1 Robert Barrow hadn't cooled yet When they dressed his boy in black, Pinned his father's silver on him, Put the Iron Chair at his back. Geoffrey liked the way folks lowered Eyes whenever he walked by, Liked how grown men stopped their talking When he happened to pass by. His mother said, “A badge has burdens. Men will judge each thing you do.” Geoffrey turned the silver over. “Then they'll learn not to.” [HARMONICA — ♭3→♭5→5 | dirty draw bend] Chorus [DREADNOUGHT opens | menacing swagger, NEVER rush] There's a boy in the Iron Chair, And everybody bows. Yesterday they told him “someday.” Nobody tells him “no” now. Law is whatever leaves his mouth. Truth is whatever survives. Seven counties watch Crown Junction— And Crown Junction holds its eyes. [TELECASTER — ♭5→5 | REFUSE 6] Verse 2 — Sarah [THIN to dreadnought + bass] Sarah Winter wore her best dress. Geoffrey summoned her at noon. Asked if she still loved her father. She said, “I loved him. Still do.” Room went quiet. Mother stiffened. Geoffrey smiled and leaned ahead. “You know your father was a traitor?” Sarah answered, “So you said.” [HARMONICA — low bent ♭5] He waited for an apology. Sarah offered none. For one long moment everybody saw How badly that could sting. Verse 3 [BOOTHEEL PERCUSSION enters | Tele terse] At first his games were little things— Make a deputy crawl. Make an old man beg forgiveness For not bowing in the hall. Made two prisoners fight each other. Promised one he'd set him free. When the winner dropped his weapon, Geoffrey said, “Changed my mind.” [DRY SNARE CRACK] [TELECASTER — nasty ♭5→5 | NO 6] His mother whispered, “That's enough.” Geoffrey turned his head. “Whose chair is this?” [HARMONICA — slow minor answer] Nothing more was said. Chorus There's a boy in the Iron Chair, And everybody bows. Yesterday they told him “someday.” Nobody tells him “no” now. Mercy makes him restless. Fear can make him grin. Every time the room gets quiet— He wants it quiet again. [HARMONICA — 1→♭3→4→♭5 | HOLD] Verse 4 — Learning Power [DREADNOUGHT — heavier low-string ostinato] Geoffrey learned a courthouse secret Faster than his mother planned: You don't need to pull the trigger When a hundred guns obey your hand. Ruin one man with a paper. Hang another with a word. Make a lie become the record Just because it's what they heard. He signed three names before his supper. Asked, “What happens after that?” Deputy said, “They hang at sunrise.” Geoffrey smiled. “Good.” And handed back the stack. Instrumental — Iron Chair [DREADNOUGHT — 1–♭3–4 ostinato | heavy, spacious] [MINOR HARMONICA FEATURE — 1–♭3–4–♭5–5 | breathy bent draw notes | sinister, NEVER jaunty] [TELECASTER answers ♭5→5 | repeatedly REFUSE 6] [RESONATOR — FAR BENEATH band | first distant ♭5→5→6 | HUMAN instruments ignore it] Bridge — Mother and Son [NEARLY SPOKEN | drums fall away] His mother found him after midnight Sitting where his father sat. Said, “You cannot rule through terror.” Geoffrey smiled. “Imagine that.” “You need the sheriffs.” “They need me.” “You need the North.” “They'll kneel.” “And if they don't?” [LONG PAUSE] Geoffrey settled in the Iron Chair. “Then we'll hear them squeal.” [HARMONICA — tortured ♭5 bend] Verse 5 — The Offer [LOW tense groove] Morning brought a northern rider With an offer in his hand: “Give us Sarah. Keep your chair. Let the North govern its land. Too much blood has soaked the Seven. We can end this here and now.” Geoffrey listened almost kindly. Even nodded once somehow. Then he pointed toward the square. Said, “Tell Rob Winter there's a gift From his father waiting there.” [ALL DROP] Sarah whispered, “Don't.” His mother snapped, “Geoffrey. No.” [HARMONICA — single ♭5] He looked at both of them and smiled. “You still think that's your word.” Final Chorus [FULL DARK GROOVE | heavier, NOT faster] **There's a boy in the Iron Chair, And everybody bows. Yesterday his mother ruled him— She ain't certain that she does now.** Every cruelty buys silence. Every silence feeds the flame. Seven counties call him Marshal— But nobody says it quite the same. [TELECASTER — ♭5→5 | abrupt stop] Outro — The Other War [CROWN JUNCTION instruments gradually disappear] [HARMONICA motif fades into WIND] [RESONATOR — suddenly foreground | ♭2→1] Far beyond the Seven Counties, Past the final telegraph, Something crossed a frozen river. Left no footprints on its path. [RESONATOR — ♭5→5→6 | sustain] Back in Crown Junction Geoffrey laughed, Safe upon his Iron Chair. [WIND rises] Whatever's coming out of the Long Dark... Doesn't know he's there. [RESONATOR — ♭2→1→♭5→5→6 | hold 6 against final minor chord] [NO RESOLUTION]
