[Intro] Heave… and hold Heave… and hold The dark don’t ask your name [Verse 1] They signed us on at the end of the dock No lamp, no list, no light The captain smiled with too many teeth And said we’d sail tonight I thought I heard the last watch singing But the mouths were sewn up tight [Call and Response] Weigh anchor in the dark! (Weigh anchor in the dark!) The dead still man the braces Weigh anchor in the dark! (Weigh anchor in the dark!) They’re lashed where the living places [Verse 2] I took a bunk that was already warm The blanket knew a shape At dawn I saw them on the rail Still working, still awake They turned their heads when I said “morning” And the morning didn’t take [Call and Response] Weigh anchor in the dark! (Weigh anchor in the dark!) Don’t look too long at the crew Weigh anchor in the dark! (Weigh anchor in the dark!) They’re waiting to replace you [Bridge] Fathom by fathom the chain comes home The locker already knows If you still have a shadow at first light You haven’t been below [Final Call] Weigh anchor in the dark Weigh anchor in the dark The ship is full The ship is hungry Weigh anchor in the dark
