After open channels filled with static and screaming metal, the steady rhythm of medical monitors sounds almost artificial. ONE sits upright despite the pain pulling at his ribs. The injuries aren’t critical. But they are real. Ryn stands by the window, watching emergency lights blink across the darkened city while reconstruction drones move between broken towers. Neither speaks at first. “You should be resting,” she says softly. A faint huff escapes him. “You too.” Silence lingers—not comfortable, not hostile. Unfinished. Her fingers curl against the glass. “You left me.” “She was going to die.” “You always stay with me.” “That wasn’t a choice.” “It was. For you.” He exhales slowly. “There are things you don’t know.” “Then tell me.” A pause. He doesn’t. And that silence says enough. Ryn steps back, hurt flashing across her expression—quick, hidden. “I thought we moved together. Like harmony. Like we promised.” “We did. We still do.” “But you chose her.” Not accusation—confusion. He tries to sit upright. Pain flares across his side. The monitor spikes. “I protected someone. That’s what we do.” “But it was different. You broke formation.” He closes his eyes. “Yes.” That single word fractures something fragile between them. The door slides open. Aki enters without ceremony. “Report.” She glances between them. “Actually, never mind. I can feel the tension from the hallway.” “Let me pilot ORION,” Ryn says. “No,” Aki answers. “I can synchronize with it.” “You can resonate with it. That’s different,” Aki corrects. “ORION answers to your voice. It survives because of his reflexes.” “And if his reflexes hesitate again?” Ryn presses. “They won’t,” ONE says. “They won’t be doing anything for at least a week,” Aki adds. Silence settles again. Ryn looks at ONE—not angry, not hurt—but unsettled. Then she leaves. The eastern district still carries heat from earlier strikes. Civilians move through debris under pulsing emergency lights. Ryn steps onto the edge of a broken fountain. No platform. No amplification grid. Just her voice. She closes her eyes—and sings. The first note wavers. The second holds. By the third, the district softens. A soldier lowers his weapon. A child stops crying. The melody is the same one that fractured in space. But here—it continues. When she finishes, a man in a Federation lieutenant’s coat steps forward. “Lieutenant Youtem. You’re with Musicalis.” Ryn nods. “I reviewed the last engagement. After your broadcast, two squads disengaged without orders. Casualty projections dropped.” “I didn’t finish the song.” “You didn’t need to. It changed their timing.” Sirens erupt overhead. WAR ALERT. The sky flickers with intercept lines. “We’re deploying.” “I’m coming.” “You don’t have a unit.” “I don’t need one to be heard.” He studies her, then nods. “Stay within my vector.” Back in the hospital room, the emergency broadcast cuts through the quiet. ONE sees her immediately—standing exposed beneath rising intercept signatures. His expression hardens. “Aki.” “I see it,” she replies. “She’s outside protected radius,” ONE says. “I am aware,” Aki answers. He swings his legs over the side of the bed. Pain lances through his ribs. He ignores it. “You are not cleared.” “I don’t need clearance to fly.” “You can barely stand.” He does stand. The room tilts—but he steadies himself. Falling now would be worse than the pain. On-screen, Ryn’s voice threads into open channels as beams begin to fire. Unshielded. Not reckless. Committed. “Ryn. Withdraw. You do not have ORION support.” No response. Just singing. “You two are going to be the end of my career.” Moments later, her motorcycle engine ignites outside the hospital bay. If the singer won’t retreat, and the pilot won’t rest—then the engineer will intervene. In the corridor, ONE takes a slow step forward. The harmony between them isn’t broken. But it is shifting. And battles do not wait for perfect timing. Ryn’s unfinished melody rises again. Not broken. Not whole. But stronger than before. WAR ALERT。
