THE MOUNTAIN SCREAMED BACK
I went back up that mountain Don't ask me why Moon hanging crooked In a black-blue sky And somewhere way above me... Oh hell. I knew that sound I'd heard it before That crazy old goat Calling out from the ridge once more He stood by the stone Like he was waiting on me Didn't move Didn't blink Just looked toward the trees Then he took one breath Threw his head way back And screamed... But this time... Something screamed back. The mountain screamed back Lord, I heard it clear Rolled through the valley Like thunder in my ear The goat looked at me I looked at the goat Neither one of us moved The mountain screamed back And whatever answered... Wasn't you. Something in the mountain Woke up today The goat screamed once... And I ran away! Now folks down in town Say I'm making it up Old Earl just laughed And filled my coffee cup Said mountains make noises Rocks settle at night Yeah... Rocks don't yodel, Earl. See? Three nights later Nobody slept Dogs started barking And the church bell wept There on the ridge In the pale moon glow Stood my crazy friend And something else below One set of horns... Then two. Oh, you've gotta be kidding me. Maybe some doors Should stay shut Maybe some hills Know too much Maybe when darkness Calls your name You don't answer back You don't play that game But somebody should've told... The goat. THE MOUNTAIN SCREAMED BACK! Lord, the whole earth shook Stars went dark And the river changed course The goat looked at me Like... "What'd I do?" I said... "Buddy, I think It answered YOU." Something in the mountain WOKE UP TODAY! If that goat screams again... I'm moving away! Nope.
