The Uncarved Block
[Verse 1] They call the child unfinished, A question needing form, A little piece of clay awaiting Hands to keep it warm. “Here is what is virtuous. Here is what the wise have known. Here are the heroes you should follow. Here is how the good are grown.” They teach the answer early, Before the question learns to speak, And call the growing certainty A foundation, not a leash. [Pre-Chorus] If I tell you who the heroes are Before you learn to choose, Have I given you a compass— Or simply given you my shoes? [Chorus] What if the uncarved block is not a flaw? What if it was never waiting for our law? What if “shaping” means we press Our favorite form upon the rest? We call it wisdom. We call it light. We call it virtue, truth, and right. But what if the thing we call becoming Is only learning to resemble us? [Verse 2] We teach them what enlightened means, Then teach them who is wise. We praise the people who agree And pity different eyes. “This is what a good one does.” “This is what the brave believe.” “This is what our heroes knew.” “This is what you must achieve.” The lesson doesn't need a prison. It only needs a prize. Make obedience feel virtuous, And questions feel unwise. [Pre-Chorus 2] A child can learn a thousand words Before they learn to doubt. If every road begins with “ours,” How would they know there's another route? [Chorus] What if the uncarved block is not a flaw? What if it was never waiting for our law? What if “shaping” means we press Our favorite form upon the rest? We call it wisdom. We call it light. We call it virtue, truth, and right. But what if the thing we call becoming Is only learning to resemble us? [Verse 3 — broader] A school can shape a student. A nation shapes its own. A church can shape a believer. A movement shapes its children. Every hand can say, “I only want what's best.” Every sculptor can sincerely Call the carving love. And perhaps some lessons matter. Perhaps some guidance should remain. But who taught us that our mold Was neutral when we made it? [Bridge — quiet] Don't leave the child without a question. Don't leave the mind without a door. Teach them how to test an answer. Teach them they can ask for more. Tell them: “I may be wrong.” Tell them: “You may disagree.” Tell them: “Here is what I believe. Now learn why I believe it— and decide what you believe.” [Final Chorus — wider] What if the uncarved block is not a flaw? What if becoming doesn't mean becoming ours? What if a child can grow in wisdom Without inheriting our scars? We call it teaching. We call it care. We call it giving them a prayer. But love should leave a window open For a mind to find its own air. [Final Verse / Outro — gentle] Let the flower choose its turning. Let the river find its way. Let the child inherit questions Along with what we say. I will show you what I treasure. I will tell you what I know. But I will not call you broken Because you haven't chosen yet. The block is not unfinished. It is uncarved.
