City of Ashes: A Lament in Four Movements
[MOVEMENT I – The City We Deserved] [intro] How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she who was great among the nations! She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has none to comfort her. [guitars enter] Jerusalem sinned grievously; therefore she became filthy; all who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness. [spoken bridge] The Lord is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word. [refrain] There may yet be hope. [instrumental interlude] [MOVEMENT II – He Turned His Face] [verse] How the Lord in his anger has set the daughter of Zion under a cloud! He has cast down from heaven to earth the splendor of Israel. He has bent his bow like an enemy; he has poured out his wrath like fire. He has laid waste his booth like a garden, laid in ruins his meeting place. [breakdown] My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns. My bile is poured out to the ground because infants and babies faint in the streets of the city. [refrain] There may yet be hope. There may yet be hope. [instrumental interlude] [MOVEMENT III – Wormwood & Gall] [soft intro] I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath. He has driven and brought me into darkness without any light. He has made my flesh and my skin waste away; he has broken my bones. [guitar builds in] He has filled me with bitterness; he has sated me with wormwood. My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is. So I say: “My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the Lord.” [refrain] There may yet be hope... There may yet be hope... [major key shift] But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. [gang vocals] “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. [Refrain] There may yet be hope. [instrumental interlude] [MOVEMENT IV – This Yoke Is Mine] [verse] It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. Let him sit alone in silence when it is laid on him; let him put his mouth in the dust— there may yet be hope. Let him give his cheek to the one who strikes, and let him be filled with insults. [build] For the Lord will not cast off forever. Though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love. [drum break] [outro] There may yet be hope There may yet be hope There may yet be hope There may yet be hope
