Seven Badges
[INTRO — CINEMATIC SPAGHETTI WESTERN × OUTLAW COUNTRY VOODOO BLUES | ~92 BPM | dark lazy 4/4 | huge dry DREADNOUGHT low-string pulse | deep five-string bass | snare fractionally behind beat] [TELECASTER — sparse 1–♭3–4–5 phrase | dry desert twang, huge space] [DISTANT WHISTLE — lonely motif across open country] Verse 1 [LOW WEATHERED BARITONE — storyteller, lazy behind beat] Seven counties under one hard sun, Seven badges and seven guns, Seven men swearing their law was right, Seven courthouse lamps burning into the night. One kept peace with a velvet hand, One bought judges and stole good land, One hung boys before they could plead— And every badge called the other six thieves. [TELECASTER — dry ♭3→4→5 answer] Chorus [DREADNOUGHT widens | restrained, ominous] Seven badges, seven laws, Seven versions of the truth, Seven graves beneath the cottonwoods Still filling up with youth. Every sheriff guards his county, Every county guards its name— While somewhere north of everything... [RESONATOR — FIRST appearance | distant ♭5→5→6] The Winters watch the rain. Verse 2 [BOOTHEEL PERCUSSION enters subtly] At the center of the Seven Stands a courthouse old and wide, And an ugly iron chair there No honest man should want to ride. They say the badge that holds that county Gets the final word out here— So six men dream about that chair... And the seventh dreams of fear. [RESONATOR — faint low scrape] Sheriff Winter sends his letters. Same damn warning every fall. Most get read beside the whiskey. Some don't get read at all. Refrain [STRIP to dreadnought + bass] “Winter is coming.” So say the Winters. [TELECASTER — amused little answer] “Winter is coming.” Every year. One sheriff laughed and fed the stove With Winter's latest telegram. Said, “Cold comes every winter. That's why God invented lamb.” [SCATTERED SALOON LAUGHTER] [RESONATOR — very distant ♭5→5→6 | laughter dies] Verse 3 [LOWER REGISTER | groove grows darker, NOT faster] Then August brought a rider south From somewhere past Winter County, Horse near dead and rider worse, Ice hanging from his bounty. Said a mining town quit answering. Said the northern trail went white. Said he'd seen hoofprints in the snow— [PAUSE] Where no horse had passed that night. [RESONATOR — ♭5→5→6 | sustain 6] Sheriff said, “You've had too much.” Doctor said, “He's froze half blind.” Rider grabbed him by the collar— Said, “Then tell me what froze mine.” Instrumental — Seven Counties [DREADNOUGHT — hard low-string VOODOO ostinato 1–♭3–4–♭5–5–6] [TELECASTER — sparse dry answers | bends ♭5→5 but AVOIDS 6] [RESONATOR — answers TELE from great distance | ALWAYS completes phrase onto 6] [FIVE-STRING BASS — deep economical roots/fifths | occasional low-B weight] [DISTANT WHISTLE begins familiar Western motif, then unexpectedly lands on ♭3] [RESONATOR — metallic slide beneath it] Verse 4 Down south they're fighting water rights. East county's fighting gold. West county shot two deputies For crossing where they're told. One sheriff wants the Iron Chair. Another wants him dead. One promises a hundred guns— Sheriff Winter shakes his head. [INSTRUMENTS THIN] His deputy asks, “Think they'll help us?” Winter folds the message thin. Looks toward the northern mountains. Says, “Words are wind.” [RESONATOR — low ♭5] Then: “And this one's blowing in.” [♭5→5→6 — HOLD] Bridge — Where the Telegraph Ends [GROOVE nearly disappears | dreadnought heartbeat | faint telegraph clicking] Far north of Winter County Where the telegraph line ends, Young man works the final station. Hasn't heard from home in ten. Snow starts tapping at his window. [PAUSE] August seventeen. He checks the calendar twice. Checks the thermometer— Thirteen. [RESONATOR — Voodoo scale begins contaminating with ♭2: low ♭2→1 scrape] Verse 5 [VERY SPARSE | supernatural vocabulary now entering] Telegraph key starts clicking. Operator takes his chair. “Winter Station, who's transmitting?” Only static answers there. Then five marks come down the wire. Same five come through again. He writes them down. Can't read them. [TELEGRAPH — five-beat pattern] Then hears horses in the wind. [RESONATOR — ♭2→1 | ♭5→5→6] Final Chorus [HUMAN groove returns, but Long Dark now underneath it] Seven badges, seven laws, Seven men who won't agree, Seven counties drawing boundaries Like lines can make them free. Let 'em fight about the Iron Chair. Let 'em murder for a name. Something north of Winter County... [RESONATOR — rising] Doesn't know they're playing games. [DREADNOUGHT stops] Outro [TELEGRAPH STATION | wind | no drums] [TELEGRAPH — same five marks] Operator bolts the window. Checks the rifle by his side. Something passes by the lantern. Too damn tall... [RESONATOR — ♭2→1] Too damn quiet... [FOOTSTEPS stop outside] He whispers: “Who's there?” [THREE SLOW KNOCKS] [RESONATOR — ♭5 begins bending] [LOW DISTANT VOICE — almost lost in wind] “Cold comes for everybody.” [5→6] [BLACKOUT — NO RESOLUTION]
