(Ancient Chinese)
———————— English Translation ———————— Each Voice Completes the Others [Short Intro — Late Night, Two Voices Answer] One voice comes to rest. Another enters at an angle. It does not follow the same melody, yet somehow belongs beside it. A third voice laughs: “Is there room here for me?” Before anyone answers, he has already added a note. [Verse 1 — The Five Voices Return] One keeps the turn of his homeland. One still carries a melody from the market. One lets his higher phrases rise; another answers slowly from below. The fifth no longer searches for the middle— he waits for the other four to pass. This time they trim no edges and close no empty spaces. Each sings what is his to sing and listens for what is not his own. Five voices gradually fill the room. Not one is the same. [Pre-Chorus] Where one goes first, another may follow. Where one asks, another may answer. Sometimes they share a phrase; sometimes each follows his own line. They no longer ask their voices to resemble one another, only that each should carry something onward. Last night they lost their harmony. Tonight, no one needs to name what they have found. [Chorus] Each voice, each voice, has somewhere it came from. One man, one melody; still we share this step. You need not imitate me, nor I replace you. Only when five voices meet does this song become whole. Each voice, each voice, has somewhere it may go. High or low, quick or slow—each has its place. Before one voice has faded, all the others answer. We need not sound the same to walk the same road. [Verse 2 — Leaving the City at Dawn] Morning opens the ward gates. The five gather their traveling things. Chang’an remains behind them; the road ahead is uncertain again. Someone asks, “Where now?” One of them smiles and points ahead. The others give no answer. They simply shoulder their bags. Once they came to Chang’an, each carrying a private wish. Today they leave Chang’an without asking how long the road may be. [Pre-Chorus 2] On the bridges they learned one measure. In the market, a hundred voices. Beneath one lamp, they lost their harmony. In the darkness, they heard one another again. Five roads need not become one road. Only when the road divides, someone still waits for the others. [Bridge — Each Sings One Line] One says: “The mountains are long; I will sing their sound.” One says: “The waters run far; I will carry their voice.” One says: “The market was loud; I remember its people.” One says: “The night was still; I will keep what remained.” The fifth listens, then only smiles: “That will do.” And the five begin to sing. No two sing the same line. Yet the song finds its own way. [Final Chorus — Five Distinct Lines Interweave] Each voice, each voice, has something of its own. One song, five roads; none need resemble another. You keep your voice, and I will keep mine. Leave a little space, and each completes the other. Each voice, each voice, beneath the same morning. The gate lies behind us; the road ahead is long. Before one voice has faded, all the others answer. Five travelers walk on, each singing in his own way. “Is Chang’an still far?” This morning, they do not ask. “Where is home?” The road will tell. [Outro] Sunrise over the great road. Five shadows travel east. Someone begins a melody. Someone answers differently. Voice after voice— neither chasing nor copying. Beyond the next pavilion, it has already become a song.
