#6 "Four Minutes" by Half-Meant

V6

[Intro] Moved my boxes across the bridge. Just past the gravel yard. The crossing bar goes down for freights, Then the path is clear. [Verse 1] No more checking the train balance. No more walking fast on cold asphalt. A very reasonable trade. The bedroom gets the morning sun. I told my sister it was practical; She asked if the kitchen had a fan. [Verse 2] Now he drifts in past dark. Gray fleece, bare ankles on the mat. Brings a plastic sack of cheap tangerines. "Saw your kitchen light from the road." He doesn't ask if I've eaten. I don't look up from the ironing board. [Chorus] Four minutes flat. The crossing bar stays down. We shaved the friction to the bone. Now he peels fruit on the hardwood floor, And the silence doesn't cost a thing. [Verse 3] Last year, when we lived on different lines, I used the iron on my linen shirts. Put a silver clip into my hair. Now he drops his damp socks by the bath, Borrows the scissors from my desk. I pull the white threads off the tangerine, Sitting side-by-side without a word. [Pre-Chorus] It takes no planning to cross the bridge. It takes no shoes to stay an hour. Nothing is special when it's free. [Chorus] Four minutes flat. The crossing bar stays down. We shaved the friction to the bone. Now he peels fruit on the hardwood floor, And the silence doesn't cost a thing. [Bridge] The economist on the radio said: When you make something cheap, people burn it till it’s gone. I turned the dial to another station. The iron hissed against the board. [Guitar / Bass Interlude] [Final Chorus] Four minutes flat. The crossing bar stays down. We made it easy, we made it cheap. Nobody dresses up anymore. We got rid of the distance, And now the fire is out of wood. [Outro] He wipes his fingers on his knee. "See you tomorrow," he says. He will. The crossing bell rings in the dark.
