Quiet, Permanent

Yesterday I found an hour I didn’t owe, climbed up where the summers used to go. Cardboard towers, suitcases in rows, labels fading like the names of roads. I thought I’d just be sorting dust and string - didn’t know what time would start to sing. Back when we were hunting for a steadier door, counting every coin on the kitchen floor, we landed here - no victory parade, just you and me, and a promise we made. You said it isn’t what the numbers say, it’s who stays close when they don’t behave. When the account ran thin, you didn’t flinch - you made a home out of an inch. So I set these boxes down, let the silence move, what matters isn’t stored - what matters is proof: the way you held me through the worst of it, engraved in me - quiet, permanent. There were bills we couldn’t tame on time, meals built small, but somehow still divine. And when we learned what wouldn’t come to be - no child’s laugh running down the hallway - we let it hurt, then let it leave, and made our peace with the life we’d keep. And when the world came loud with “choose a side,” when other voices tried to borrow our minds, even in our disagreements, sharp and true, you stayed with me - like you always do. You said it isn’t what the numbers say, it’s who stays close when they don’t behave. When the room spun hard, you were my brace - a steady hand, a steady face. So I set these boxes down, let the silence move, what matters isn’t stored - what matters is proof: the way you held me through the worst of it, engraved in me - quiet, permanent. Then days got heavier, breath by breath, and I learned the weight of “almost” and “if.” I kept my vigil, night and day, trying to bargain the dark away. But you had that look - no fear, no fight - like you’d already made your peace with the light. And I understood what love must do: walk beside you… and not pull you through. Not in the photos, not in the letters, not in the attic air, but in the vow you taught my shaking hands to wear. I can pack up the years, fold up the proof, but I can’t pack up you - you’re still my roof. If there’s a road that circles back, if time is kind, I’ll know you in the quiet, without a sign. Till then I’ll live the way you asked me to - stay close to what is real… and carry you. So I close the lid, let the rafters sleep - what I needed most, I get to keep.
