Verse 1: Cupbearer to the Persian king, He heard the news one day, "Jerusalem's walls are broken down, The gates consumed by flame." He sat down, wept, and mourned and fasted, Prayed to God above, "Remember Your covenant promise, Your people whom You love." Chorus: Rebuild the walls, restore the gates, Though enemies mock and scheme, "The God of heaven will give us success, We'll rise and build," he'd dream. With trowel in one hand, sword in the other, They worked both night and day, Rebuild the walls, restore the gates, God made a way. Verse 2: The king saw sadness on his face, "What is your request?" "Send me to Judah," Nehemiah asked, "To rebuild what's distressed." The king granted all he asked, With letters and supplies, But Sanballat and Tobiah, Would mock with scornful eyes. Chorus: Rebuild the walls, restore the gates, Though enemies mock and scheme, "The God of heaven will give us success, We'll rise and build," he'd dream. With trowel in one hand, sword in the other, They worked both night and day, Rebuild the walls, restore the gates, God made a way. Bridge: "What are these feeble Jews doing?" The enemies would jeer, "If a fox climbed up, it would break down, Their wall of stone so sheer." But Nehemiah prayed to God, "Hear how we're despised, Turn their insults back on them," And the people worked with pride. Final Chorus: Rebuild the walls, restore the gates, Though enemies mock and scheme, "The God of heaven will give us success, We'll rise and build," he'd dream. With trowel in one hand, sword in the other, They worked both night and day, Rebuilt the walls, restored the gates, In fifty-two days they'd say. When enemies heard, they lost confidence, They realized God had done this work, The walls of Jerusalem standing strong, Where God's glory would not lurk.
