Paranoid Paul
[Verse 1] By my seventh week on the overnight crew I knew what most of the forklifts would do Wendy complained, Betty judged every move Carl found problems, Gus refused to approve But nobody talked much about Paul Just lowered their voices out in the hall And whenever his number came up at break The conversation always seemed to take a strange shape [Pre-Chorus] I asked Joe, [Spoken] "What's wrong with Paul?" Joe looked around before answering at all. [Spoken] "Paul notices things." That was somehow less comforting. [Chorus] Paranoid Paul thinks somebody's watching Every aisle, every dock, every pallet we're stocking Every shadow has a reason to be there at all At least that's what believes Paul Paranoid Paul sees patterns and signs In battery levels and painted lines Most nights he's probably wrong But not always for long [Verse 2] I took him down receiving lane three And immediately felt him disagree A soft warning beep. A pause. Another. Like he was trying to tell me something. We passed aisle eight. Beep. Dock door six. Beep. The emergency exit. Beep. I checked the load twice. Nothing wrong. No danger. No issue to be found. Yet Paul kept watching. [Verse 3] Halfway through the shift I asked around. "What's his deal?" The crew gathered close. Mike said, [Spoken] "Paul predicted the sprinkler leak." Sarah said, [Spoken] "He caught the loose rack beam." Joe nodded. [Spoken] "And the battery charger fire." I laughed. [Spoken] "You're kidding." Nobody laughed back. [Chorus] Paranoid Paul thinks somebody's watching Every aisle, every dock, every pallet we're stocking Every shadow has a reason to be there at all At least that's what believes Paul Paranoid Paul sees patterns and signs In battery levels and painted lines Most nights he's probably wrong But not always for long [Bridge] Around two a.m. the warehouse fell still Just charger lights glowing over the hill Paul stopped moving. Not stalled. Not broken. Stopped. His sensors pointed toward the far wall. The old storage section. The one nobody used anymore. And for the first time all night... I felt it too. Like somebody had just walked past. But there was nobody there. [Instrumental Break] [Final Chorus] Paranoid Paul thinks somebody's watching Every aisle, every dock, every pallet we're stocking Maybe he's nervous, maybe he's strange Maybe he's noticing things we can't explain Paranoid Paul sees patterns and signs In battery levels and painted lines And if the warehouse has secrets at all Paul already knows them all [Outro] As the shift ended, I parked him beside the chargers. His dashboard lights faded one by one. Then a single sensor light blinked toward the dark end of the building. The abandoned storage section. The place nobody worked. The place nobody talked about. And for the first time since I started here... I wondered if Paul was paranoid. Or if everyone else wasn't paranoid enough.
