[INTRO — OUTLAW COUNTRY VOODOO BLUES | lazy 4/4 | big low drums, snare behind beat | warm five-string Precision-style bass | dry acoustic rhythm] [TELECASTER — sparse VOODOO phrase 1–♭3–4–♭5–5–6 | clean gritty bridge tone | first ♭5→5→6 bend, unresolved and slightly uneasy] Verse 1 [LOW MALE BARITONE — conversational, lazy, behind groove] Great-Granddad helped Granddad build her, Nineteen twenty-eight Model A, Two old hands and one young dreamer Putting yesterday away. He'd cleaned the carb and set the timing, Had her nearly fit to run, But Great-Granddad never drove her— He was gone before they were done. [TELECASTER — quiet ♭5→5→6 | HOLD 6] Granddad finished what they'd started, Kept her polished, kept her good, But he'd shake his head when Dad asked why He never drove her like he should. Chorus [Groove opens slightly | vocal still restrained] Granddad said that Ford was haunted, Daddy wouldn't drive it too, I said ghosts were made for stories Old men tell when nights get blue. Three generations kept her shining, Still nobody understood— Why you'd own a car you wouldn't drive When she ran that damn good. [TELECASTER — amused short 5→6] Verse 2 Daddy kept her in the garage, Changed the oil, turned her round, Started her on Sunday mornings Just to hear that engine sound. Then one day the keys were handed Down another branch to me, I said, “Boys, if there's a ghost in there, He's welcome company.” [TELECASTER — ♭5→5→6 | slightly ominous] So I filled her up that evening, Took the old road out of town— Windows open, flathead humming, Sun going down. Verse 3 — Four-Way Stop [INSTRUMENTS THIN | bass + lazy drums | TELE nearly absent] Four-way stop looked clear and empty. Not a headlight either way. Clutch went in, I found first gear, Had my foot coming away— [ALL BUT BASS DROP] Then somebody beside me said: “Wait.” [TELECASTER — SHARP ♭5→5→6 | sustain 6 against minor harmony] I froze. One second later— [DRUMS — violent low accent] Eighteen wheels blew through that crossing Like the Devil running late. [LONG PAUSE] I looked over at the empty seat. Said, “Granddad...?” Nothing. Then that same old voice said— “Nope.” [TELECASTER — warm 5→6 answer] Chorus [Full lazy pocket returns] Granddad said that Ford was haunted. Maybe Granddad had it right. Something rode that road beside me And saved my ass that night. I don't know what you call it. I just know where I stood— First time I thought maybe being haunted Didn't have to mean no good. Verse 4 — The Years [STEADY GROOVE | each intervention marked by SAME Tele signature] One December she wouldn't start up. [TELECASTER — ♭5→5→6] Cussed that Ford and stayed at home. Morning news said Miller's Bridge Was lying somewhere downstream. One July the wheel pulled left— [TELECASTER — ♭5→5→6] Just before a big buck ran. Once I heard him say, “Ease up, boy.” County cruiser topped the span. [TELECASTER — playful 5→6] After that I quit pretending There was nothing going on. Started talking while I drove her. Funny... Sometimes he'd talk along. Instrumental [TELECASTER FEATURE — VOODOO vocabulary 1–♭3–4–♭5–5–6 | sparse expressive bends, double-stops, lots of AIR | recurring ♭5→5→6 motif becomes increasingly WARM rather than threatening] [FIVE-STRING PRECISION BASS — deep economical roots/fifths, occasional low-B punctuation | NEVER busy] [DRUMS — huge low kick/toms | snare deliberately fractionally LATE] Bridge [EVENING DRIVE | strip to bass, acoustic + light drums] One night that old lick came calling— [TELECASTER — familiar ♭5→5→6] So I slowed and looked around. No deer. No truck. No washed-out bridge. Nothing moving but the clouds. Road ran clear for miles ahead, Sunset burning through the wood. I laughed and said, “Just riding tonight?” [PAUSE] [TELECASTER — gentle 5→6, NO ♭5] I smiled. “Yeah. Me too.” Final Chorus [Full band | warm, deep, NEVER triumphant or sentimental] Granddad said that Ford was haunted. Turns out Granddad had it right. Great-Granddad never got to drive her— Guess he's making up for it tonight. Windows down, that flathead humming, Moonlight rolling down the hood— I used to say that car was haunted. [TELECASTER — 5→6] Now I just say the company is good. Outro [DRUMS gradually fall away | five-string + acoustic + Tele] I tell him about my troubles. He don't answer very much. Sometimes that old Ford rattles Like he's laughing at my clutch. [TELECASTER — familiar motif begins, but OMIT ♭5 completely | 5 bends slowly into warm 6] Great-Granddad never drove her. Guess there's time for that somehow. [LOW MALE VOCAL — easy smile] He waited near on sixty years... We're making up for it now. [TELECASTER — 5→6 | sustain warmly against minor tonic] [MODEL A engine settles into steady idle] [FADE — NO DARK RESOLUTION]
