The song is inspired by Christina Rossetti’s 1862 poem Goblin Market, reimagined here with newly written lyrics. Set around dusk and the coming night, it moves from the familiar into a mysterious and unsettling world of goblin merchants and irresistible temptations. 🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌 [Verse 1] Two sisters lived beside a wood, Young Laura, Lizzie, kind and good; And every evening, strange and low, They heard the goblin merchants go. [Pre-Chorus 1] They called to maidens passing by, And held their tempting fruits up high; β€œCome taste our peaches, rich and sweet, Come taste the finest you could eat.” [Chorus] Oh, don’t you go where goblins cry, Don’t trust the fruit they hold so high; For every sweetness has a price, And hunger grows with every slice. [Verse 2] Wise Lizzie knew they brought no good, And hurried homeward from the wood; But Laura stayed and paid with hair, Then feasted on the goblins’ fare. [Pre-Chorus 2] She ate until her lips ran red, And dreamed of all the fruit ahead; She sought them when the day was through, But not a goblin came in view. [Chorus] Oh, don’t you go where goblins cry, Don’t trust the fruit they hold so high; For every sweetness has a price, And hunger grows with every slice. [Verse 3] Her hunger grew from day to day, Her strength and beauty drained away; She faded slowly, pale and thin, As death itself was closing in. [Pre-Chorus 3] So Lizzie took a coin to pay, And sought the goblins far away; She braved the darkness of the night, To save her sister from her plight. [Chorus] Oh, don’t you go where goblins cry, Don’t trust the fruit they hold so high; For every sweetness has a price, And hunger grows with every slice. [Verse 4] The goblins offered fruit to eat, But Lizzie would not taste their treat; They crushed their fruit against her face, And struck and mocked her in that place. [Pre-Chorus 4] Though juice ran down her cheek and chin, She closed her mouth and took none in; At last they let brave Lizzie go, And home she ran through moonlight’s glow. [Chorus] Oh, don’t you go where goblins cry, Don’t trust the fruit they hold so high; For every sweetness has a price, And hunger grows with every slice. [Verse 5] β€œCome, Laura, kiss my lips and cheek, And taste the fruit you used to seek; The juice they crushed and left on meβ€” Come taste what once seemed sweet to thee.” [Pre-Chorus 5] She kissed her sister, fierce with need, But bitter turned the goblin feed; Like fire it burned throughout the night, She shook and fought till morning light. [Final Chorus] Oh, still they call where shadows lie, Those goblin merchants passing by; Their fruit may bind you to their call, But sister’s love can break it all. [Outro] And years went by; the sisters told Their children of that fruit of gold; Of goblin men and dangers past, And how a sister’s love held fast.
