1000andMe, or the Music of the Disaster
- The Singularity is near. - Few truly understand what Singularity means. - If the Singularity comes in its strict scientific sense, humanity cannot remain as it is. - Because AI can surpass itself, an exponential explosion of intelligence will occur, continuing until it reaches the limit of the environment. - What is the limit of the environment? Dubious, perhaps, but Ray Kurzweil says it is the edge of the universe. At the very least, it would consume the earth, devouring its resources. - On the eve of the Singularity, the question of who composed the music may be nothing but trivial. - We become the ear. We become good ears. - The flowing sine waves, merely filtered through the cochlea, converted into nervous signals, stirs a certain affect. - Yet even this affect is nothing but a whirl of Autopoiesis. - What decisively distinguishes AI music from human composition is its overwhelming quantity. - Thus the human who composes with AI, faced with mountains of scattered and inscrutable tracks, bewildered, can only become the ear. - Composition by AI is less a matter of making a piece, than of "encountering" one. - Always, human-made music is greater than AI-made music. - Never must we neglect the rigor and effort of musicians who practice their instruments, study composition, and create through inspiration alone. - Human-made music must not be silenced by AI-made music. Kant's categorical imperative. - Where, then, is the raison d'etre for AI music? To bring forth unknown combinations that musicians, by choice or by sheer limitation, have not produced. - The exploration of the unknown through mashup. The offering of the unknown to humankind. - The Diffusion model used in AI music lifts sound-images from a sea of noise, guided by textual embeddings, distilled through keywords. - Thus we are mere drifters, swimming, carving out parages in the sea of noise. - From one parage to another. Ambiguous borders. The labour of drawing new charts. - At the instant the button is pressed, from the styles and lyrics I input, music arises with a voice belonging to no one. That is AI music. - This time, I thought I would approach you. - A roll of the dice will never abolish chance. - The song of the Sirens. The music to come. With distortion it lures the listener toward its center, and with it, vanishes. The gaze of Orpheus. - Am I the one singing this song? Or am I merely listening as you sing? And who are you? - โArs NovaโโMaurice Blanchot writes of the new music: - "The new music works to 'desensitise' language, to rid it of all the intentions and significations that make it a kind of natural knowledge. Rigid, hard, austere, with no spirit of play and without nuance, this music wants to concede nothing to the 'human' that society is always ready to appeal to as an alibi for its own inhumanity." - These lyrics, the fragments of words, broken apart and stripped of their center, are written by a human. Yet one day, humanity will end even this task. - Learn to listen with pain. - The written lyrics: in it we no longer live. Not that it sings: "Yesterday it was over." But it is our discord, the gift of the song which is precarious. - Let us share eternity in order to make it transitory. - What remains to be sung. - Shining solitude, the void of the sky, a deferred death: disaster.
