# The Rivers Don’t Have to Merge *ASC 2026 World Café — Ouro Preto* **[Spoken Introduction]** On the final morning in Ouro Preto We gathered around the tables. Three rounds. Three questions. Not to find one answer, But to notice what happens When different currents meet. --- **[Verse 1 — Sensing the Confluence]** *What became noticeable,* *Only because our conversations crossed?* We saw the spaces in between us, Different rhythms, different times, Mountains holding generations, Old histories in new designs. A chip connected to a church tower, Past and future in one line, Languages beside each other— Yours need not disappear in mine. Some drew membranes, some drew crossings, Some drew rivers moving through, Some asked, *Did confluence happen?* Some said, *Let it happen — don’t force it through.* **[Pre-Chorus]** Receptividade, Recepción, Receptivity— A common purpose Doesn’t need A common tongue. --- **[Chorus]** Let the rivers meet But let the rivers be, Different waters travelling In company. We don't have to merge To share the flow, We can change each other And still be what we know. Cleave together, cleave apart, Many voices, many hearts— At the confluence we learned: **Difference is where perception starts.** --- **[Verse 2 — Making Sense Together]** Then the second question travelled: *What is cybernetics becoming now?* Someone tasted all the questions— Bitter, salty, sometimes sweet. Someone wrote down *theory, theory…* Then asked, *What happens when theory meets the street?* Pororoca pushed upriver, Wind replaced the river’s banks, Threads were woven without vanishing, Difference did not need our thanks. *Suggestive — not predictive.* *Response-ability.* Emotion, body, senses, context— More than rationality. And the spect-actor stepped forward: No observer standing free— We are participants within The worlds we think we see. --- **[Chorus]** Let the rivers meet But let the rivers be, Different waters travelling In company. We don't have to merge To share the flow, We can change each other And still be what we know. Cleave together, cleave apart, Many voices, many hearts— At the confluence we learned: **Difference is where perception starts.** --- **[Bridge — The Trouble in the Current]** But underneath the conversation Other questions wouldn't sleep: What powers all this intelligence? What gets taken? Who pays? What do we keep? Gold beneath Ouro Preto, Data centres somewhere new— Extraction changes clothing, But an old thread may run through. And whose language fills the harvest? Whose words disappear unheard? *Could you repeat?* …No. Sometimes absence Is the loudest word. --- **[Verse 3 — Continuing the Inquiry]** Then came the final invitation: *What should remain unfinished here?* *What should keep on resonating* *After all of us disappear?* But instead we heard: *Now what?* *ACTION?* *Can people really do something?* *Is cybernetics problem-solving?* We wanted answers. Then another current came: **Don’t save the world— Be more a part of it.** And somebody wrote **URGENCY**, Circled it— Then crossed it out. Urgency makes priorities, Priorities make hierarchies, And things we cannot measure Are the first things we leave out. So— *How do we change?* **Elegantly.** How do we meet uncertainty? **Playfully.** How do we live without rigid certainty? **Together.** --- **[Breakdown — Voices Around the Tables]** *Can we play?* Can we flow with the wind? Can we steer without pretending We already know the end? Who sat in this chair before me? Who will sit here when I’m gone? If you had one cybernetic wish— **What would cybernetics do?** --- **[Final Chorus]** Let the rivers meet But let the rivers be, Different worlds encountering Without conformity. Let the pororoca turn us, Let the woven colours show: **Not everything that comes together Has to mix to grow.** Speak the languages of body, Speak the languages of art, Speak the language of attention, Speak the language of the heart. Bring your questions, bring your difference, Bring your generosity— The food of cybernetics may be love, And its practice— **response-ability.** --- **[Outro — quieter]** Maybe confluence cannot be manufactured. Maybe we can only Make room for it. A membrane. A crossing. A helix. A river running upstream. A paper aeroplane. A falling body Caught by another. A conversation That refuses to finish. And somewhere beyond Ouro Preto The question keeps travelling: **If you had one cybernetic wish to fulfil— What would cybernetics do?** *Not one river.* *Not one voice.* *Not one world.* **Let the confluence continue.**
