Something's wrong again

V5.5

[Intro] [Verse 1] The waiter brought the wrong thing and I nearly sent it back, then caught myself explaining how much cinnamon a cappuccino ought to have. I smiled into the saucer like an idiot who’d found a tiny piece of evidence in being difficult about it. For months I’d worn indifference like good tailoring grey and hard to stain, took whatever came with admirable grace and let whatever left me leave the same. Then somebody kept tapping their shoe against the table next to mine, and suddenly I had opinions. What an inconvenient sign. [Pre-Chorus] I thought that life would find me with some grand announcement made, but apparently it wandered in complaining about the shade. [Chorus] Something’s wrong again. Oh-oh, wonderfully wrong again. The room’s too warm, the coffee’s cold, somebody’s getting underneath my skin. Something’s wrong again. And I could almost call it good I spent so long not wanting anything, now I want things the way I would. Oh-oh... Something’s wrong again. [Instrumental] [Verse 2] There’s a badly tuned piano in the lobby downstairs, and yesterday I stopped halfway through leaving just to wonder who repairs it there. A woman wore a green coat I decided wasn’t quite the proper green, then spent the elevator ride amused at having cared enough to disagree. The dead are famously easy to please; I had perfected that routine, nothing tasted quite offensive, nothing beautiful enough to make a scene. Now the sheets feel wrong, the traffic’s loud, the toothpaste tastes too sweet such petty little grievances. Such lovely proof of appétit [Pre-Chorus 2] What if wanting is the trouble. What if trouble has its charms. What if life comes back unnoticed, then starts rearranging all the furniture in your arms. [Bridge] I kept waiting for a revelation, something bright enough to name, but the first thing I wanted badly was to change a picture frame. Then salt instead of sugar. Then the window open wide. Then somebody to stay longer than the time they had in mind. Maybe meaning is ambitious. Maybe meaning comes along. Suddenly you simply notice when the little things feel wrong. [Final Chorus] Something’s wrong again. [Outro] Much better.
