[The Scene] The road into the valley was quiet in the way places get after something irreversible has happened. Smoke drifted in thin lines from the treeline, and the air carried that heavy, sweet, unmistakable scent that told anyone with experience that the fighting had ended hours ago. A militia truck sat half‑tilted in a ditch, its doors open, its occupants unmoving. Some were adults. Some were not. Their uniforms were mismatched, their equipment scattered, their final positions frozen in a way that suggested panic, not order. Into this walked a man with a clipboard. [UI Male No. 1 Arrival] He stepped out of a clean sedan, adjusted his jacket, and surveyed the scene with the calm of someone arriving for a scheduled appointment. He didn’t cover his face. He didn’t hurry. He simply walked the perimeter, making notes in a practiced hand. He paused beside the truck, checked a serial number, and wrote something down. Then he walked a little farther, stopping at intervals as if he were assessing storm damage rather than the aftermath of a militia wiped out by a rival faction. Flies buzzed in thick, lazy spirals. He didn’t wave them away. When he finished, he clicked his pen, returned to the car, and drove up the road toward the opposing faction’s compound. The compound was intact — mostly. A few walls scorched, a gate bent inward, a guard post abandoned in a hurry. He walked through it the same way he had walked through the valley: measuring, noting, calculating. He compared the two sets of figures in his ledger. The ink shifted slightly, as if adjusting itself to the numbers he’d written. He didn’t react. He closed the book, returned to the car, and drove toward the coast. [The Port] Hours later, he stepped onto a port in Kuwait, the sun low and the air thick with diesel and brine. He moved through customs with the ease of someone who had done this many times. A quiet word here. A discreet envelope there. A signature exchanged for a favor. A favor exchanged for access. By the time he reached the private terminal, the ledger in his case had already updated itself. He didn’t need to open it to know the spread between the two sites. He didn’t need to check the numbers to know the profit. He simply walked toward the waiting car, the port workers stepping aside without being asked. He had more assessments to make.
