[Intro - Spoken, Male] THUD! Out of nowhere A blow to my head I hit my head On a stone shaped like a bull And the pain Stayed with me For three whole days [Verse 1] Down beside An old stone bridge There stood a bull Carved out of stone A blind old man Was standing there "Come closer, boy Put your ear against it You can hear a sound inside" Could it be true? I leaned in slowly Put my ear close THUD! The old man laughed "You fool! You'd better learn to be smart!" Oh, I see But still I couldn't help wondering What kind of sound Was hiding Inside that stone bull? [Chorus] That stone was there It always stood there Yesterday And today Walk down a road And people appear Meet someone And something happens When morning comes I wake again And walk Just walk [Verse 2] We had a bunch Of grapes to share One at a time We made a deal The old man ate two I quietly ate three "You ate three grapes, didn't you?" How did you know? "Because when I ate two You didn't say a word" Oh, I see Something like that Happened too [Verse 3] One rainy day Beside a river "This is the narrowest place To cross" He stood me right Before a stone pillar "Now jump!" He stepped aside THUD! The old man Hit his head And I ran away Ran out of town [Verse 4] Next I met A holy priest He kept his bread Inside a great big chest And locked it tight With a heavy key I had another key Made just the same And little by little I ate his bread "There's a mouse in here!" I made a tiny hole To make it look that way At night He slept with the key Inside his mouth A little whistling sound Slipped through his lips "There's a snake!" THUD! A sudden blow Right to my head The key came rolling Out of my mouth Three days later I opened my eyes And found myself Outside his door [Chorus] That stone was there It always stood there Beyond the bridge It still was there There was bread Inside the chest When hunger comes A hand reaches out When I wake up I walk again [Verse 5] A gentleman In splendid clothes Walked through the town And reached his home He opened the door There was nothing inside Not even a crumb Of food to eat I brought some bread I'd managed to get And we sat together Sharing the meal One day a man came To collect the rent But my fine gentleman Was nowhere to be found And there it was Another road Another road again [Verse 6] Walking down the road I met a friar He gave me A brand-new pair of shoes But eight days later There were holes Right through the soles Then came a man Who sold indulgences "Buy this paper And your sins disappear!" An officer shouted "That's a fraud!" And then He fell to the ground The seller prayed And placed the paper Upon the fallen man And up he stood! Everyone rushed To buy that paper Four whole months I stayed around [Chorus] That stone was there It always stood there By that old bridge It still was there When shoes wear out Your feet come through When water spills The ground gets wet When I wake up I walk again Just walk again [Verse 7] A man who painted Little tambourines Began another business Selling water in the streets He loaded jars Upon a donkey Up and down The town we went "Water for sale! A cup for a coin!" Four years went by And I saved my money Bought fine clothes And bought a sword And went to work Beside an officer One night a stone Came flying through the dark It struck the officer And I ran away I ran And ran away [Verse 8] In the town of Toledo I became a town crier "Something for sale! Something to tell!" I walked the streets And raised my voice One day a priest From the church said "Why don't you marry The woman who works for me?" And so we had A wedding day And started living Side by side [Bridge - Spoken Dialogue] "Your wife goes out a lot, doesn't she?" Oh, I see "She visits the priest's house, you know" Oh, I see "People are saying all sorts of things" The priest said "Don't pay attention To what people say" The three of us Sat down and talked My wife was crying And I decided We would never Speak of this again [Final Chorus] That stone was there It always stood there Beside the bridge It still was there The blind old man Who taught me pain The holy priest Who hid his bread The gentleman In splendid clothes The friar Who gave me shoes They all kept walking Their different roads And even today The town is full of people [Outro - Spoken, Male] When morning comes I open the door Out in the streets My voice rings out Beside the bridge That stone bull stands With ears that never listen The stone stays still But my will lives on The stone My will Still here Still walking [outro]
