TIME 002 – The Little Machine | The Time Machine
(Verse 1) The Traveller returned and placed a mechanism in the light, A little frame of metalwork assembled fine and bright. The sceptics leaned around it as he set it on the table, A toy, they thought, too slight and small to prove his theory stable. (Verse 2) He pointed out its levers and the saddle at its core, Then calmly spoke of journeys no machine had made before. One lever drove it forward through the undiscovered stream, The other drew it backward through the ages like a dream. (Chorus) The little machine vanished where their watching eyes had been, No smoke remained to hide it and no trick could intervene. The room stood still around them as astonishment took flight, For theory had become a thing that disappeared from sight. (Verse 3) A finger touched the lever and the tiny frame was gone, As though the moving present had swept silently it on. They searched beneath the table and they stared across the room, But nothing marked its passage and no sound disturbed the gloom. (Verse 4) Some called it clever magic, some demanded hidden art, Yet doubt had lost the certainty with which it made its start. For something solid vanished where their reason said it stayed, And every easy answer grew more fragile as it frayed. (Chorus) The little machine vanished where their watching eyes had been, No smoke remained to hide it and no trick could intervene. The room stood still around them as astonishment took flight, For theory had become a thing that disappeared from sight. (Bridge) The Traveller watched quietly while argument began, For disbelief still struggled with the evidence of man. He knew the little model was a fragment of the whole, A proof that time itself might yet surrender to control. (Outro) The guests departed troubled by the marvel they had seen, Still doubting what had happened to the little bright machine. Yet somewhere past their present, where no human eye could climb, The vanished model travelled through the hidden road of time.
