The land looked almost unreal, like the surface of the moon itself. Jagged rocks pierced through frozen plains of ice, and no trees stood anywhere on the horizon. Only wind. Endless wind. It swept across the empty landscape with a hollow whistle that made the world feel abandoned by both men and gods. Despite the freezing cold biting at her skin, Helena had not forgotten the conversation waiting to happen. “Well, you two... maybe it’s time you finally tell me what’s going on?” she asked with a dry, almost cynical tone, as though the truth had been owed to her for a very long time. Min, who had been walking slightly behind them, moved closer until she stood beside Helena. She pulled her heavy cloak higher around her face to protect herself from the wind, but the cold was not what made her tremble. Fear did. Johannes silently stepped to Helena’s other side, almost instinctively placing himself between the two women, as though he already knew how painful this confession would become. Min finally spoke. “Helena... this isn’t easy to explain. But please... promise me this stays between us.” Her voice sounded softer than usual, almost pleading. Helena looked at her carefully. For the first time in years, she could see genuine fear in Min’s mismatched eyes. Without thinking, she reached for her hand. “Min, look where we are now,” Helena said quietly. “After everything we’ve seen... I think I can handle anything.” Min forced a faint smile, though doubt still lingered in her face. She glanced toward Johannes. He gave her a slow nod. “Alright...” she whispered before taking a deep breath. “When I was little, I was different. My skin was darker back then. I still looked like the people from my homeland. But most importantly... I didn’t have this eye.” She pointed toward the crimson iris hidden beneath strands of dark hair. “Both of my eyes were blue.” Helena frowned thoughtfully. “Yes. Father told me that before. He said your appearance changed as you got older.” Min nodded slowly. “A few years after your father brought me to Skalvheim, I began having visions. Dreams. At first I thought they were nightmares... but then I started hearing voices. Feeling something inside my mind.” She looked toward Johannes briefly before turning back to Helena. “But your homeland followed the Christian god, didn’t it?” Helena asked. “Didn’t you already have your own faith?” A bitter expression crossed Min’s face. “I was never baptized. My parents...” She hesitated. “They were not cruel people. Just absent. I spent most of my childhood invisible to them.” Her gaze lowered toward the frozen ground. “I never truly hated your father for taking me away during the raid. Honestly... it felt more like he saved me from a life I wanted to escape.” Helena understood that feeling more than she wanted to admit. “But what changed your eye?” she continued. “Is it divine scrutiny? Like Mikell?” Min inhaled slowly. “Yes... something like that.” She hesitated again before continuing. “And Helena... I never lied when I said Johannes and I had never truly met.” Helena immediately stopped walking. “No, Min. Don’t say something absurd like that. I can see it plainly. You know each other.” Min shook her head firmly. “Not physically. Never physically. But Johannes appeared in my dreams... exactly like what happened to Bruno.” Helena’s expression shifted instantly. “My brother told me about that nightmare,” she muttered. “After he saw Johannes... then the wolf appeared...” Almost unconsciously, she revealed the strange ring still hanging from her fingers. Johannes immediately closed her hand around it without speaking, silently urging her to hide it. Helena stared at him in silence. He knew far more than he admitted. Min continued. “We met many times inside those dreams. Everything felt real. The cold... the touch... even the emotions.” Her voice trembled now. “And eventually... we fell in love.” Helena blinked in confusion. “You’re telling me you fell in love... inside dreams?” “You cannot imagine how real it felt,” Min whispered, tears beginning to form in her eyes. “And then... somehow... it became real.” Slowly, she placed a trembling hand against her stomach. A terrible realization crossed Helena’s face. “...No.” Min lowered her head. Helena’s eyes widened. “Wait... you mean... Bruno?” Min nodded silently, tears now running freely down her cheeks. Helena staggered backward before falling to one knee in the snow-covered rock, struggling to process what she had just heard. Min immediately knelt beside her. “It changes nothing,” she whispered desperately. “Bruno is still your brother. You still love him.” “Of course I love him,” Helena snapped back instantly, though her voice cracked beneath the weight of emotion. “But he’s not my blood...” “Blood is not everything,” Min answered softly. “Please... don’t tell your father. He never knew.” For several long moments, nobody spoke. Only the wind answered them. Eventually they resumed walking through the frozen emptiness. After some time, Helena turned toward Johannes. “And you,” she said coldly, “you’re going to explain who you really are. Because there are still far too many shadows around you.” Johannes nodded calmly. “I understand. Tonight, I’ll answer what I can. But first we need to keep movi...” He suddenly stopped. Shapes were emerging through the fog ahead. At least ten warriors surrounded them silently, dressed in unfamiliar furs and marked with strange tattoos none of them recognized. Their weapons remained lowered, but their eyes carried unmistakable danger. Helena and Min instantly raised their shields. Johannes slowly extended an arm in front of them. “Easy,” he murmured. One of the warriors finally stepped forward. Unlike the others, his expression did not seem openly hostile. He observed the three travelers carefully before speaking. “I believe these are the ones.” Then he turned toward the others. “By Odin... he’ll be glad to see them.” The atmosphere remained tense, but something in the man’s voice suggested they were expected. Outnumbered and exhausted, Helena finally lowered her weapon first. Without resistance, the three survivors allowed themselves to be bound and escorted across the frozen wasteland by this strange northern people. Familiar... yet unsettlingly distant from the Norway they once knew. 💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍 Ljós yfir heim Ljós yfir heim Vindr kalla heim Hjarta brennr enn Ljós yfir heim Óðin vakir þar Íss grætr hljótt En sól rís upp Ljós... yfir heeeim...
