When Riches Turn to Rust
Verse 1 When riches turn to idols And blessings turn to pride, The heart forgets its Maker And the Spirit steps aside. The barns are full and heavy, But the soul grows cold and thin— For the love of gold is subtle, And it slowly draws us in. Verse 2 Then secret works of darkness Grow bold beneath the sun, And the robbers rule the people Till the righteous are undone. They promise safety in the shadows, They promise gain without the cost— But every oath they whisper Is another soul they’ve lost. Chorus But the Lord still lifts the lowly, And the humble hear His voice. Though the mighty fall to darkness, Still the meek may yet rejoice. For the robbers rise like thunder— But their kingdoms turn to dust. And the Lamb remembers mercy When our riches turn to rust. Verse 3 The proud build up their idols Of silver and of gold, And trample down the needy With hearts grown hard and cold. They claim the seats of judgment, They claim the right to reign— But the Lord withdraws His Spirit When the people worship gain. Verse 4 Yet somewhere in the shadows A faithful few remain, Who walk in truth and kindness And call upon His name. And the Spirit falls upon them Like it did in days of old— For the Lord still guards the willing More than all the world’s gold. Chorus Yes, the Lord still lifts the lowly, And the humble hear His voice. Though the mighty fall to darkness, Still the meek may yet rejoice. For the robbers rise like thunder— But their kingdoms turn to dust. And the Lamb remembers mercy When our riches turn to rust. Bridge Oh, the patterns never change much— Every age repeats the tale. When the people trust in shadows, Every fortress starts to fail. But the ones who cling to heaven Find a refuge that will last, For the Lord redeems the future When we turn from broken pasts. Final Chorus So the Lord will lift the lowly, And the humble hear His voice. Though the mighty fall to darkness, Still the meek may yet rejoice. For the robbers rise like thunder— But the proud return to dust. And the Lamb restores His people When their riches turn to rust.
