Honesty?
A loose reinterpretation of “The Honest Woodcutter” 「金の斧」勝手に再解釈 [intro] Into the spring there fell an axe 春の泉へ、一振りの斧が落ちた A lonely woodsman bowed his head Then through the silver glassy waves すると銀色に揺れる水面の奥から A smiling goddess softly spoke 微笑む女神が静かに語りかけた [verse] The goddess gently raised her hand 女神はそっと手を掲げ A golden axe like blazing sun And then she asked in tender voice そして優しい声で問いかけた [pre-chorus] “Was it thee who lost this axe? 「この斧を落としたのはあなたですか?」 This axe of gold so bright?” [chorus] The honest woodsman answered thus 正直な木こりはこう答えた “That is not the axe I own” 「それは私の斧ではありません」 The golden axe is fair indeed Yet far too soft for felling wood Strike it once upon the oak Its edge would bend and fail That is not the axe I own だからそれは私の斧ではありません [verse] The goddess gently raised her hand 女神は再び静かに手を上げ A silver axe like winter moon And then she asked in tender voice そして柔らかな声で尋ねた [pre-chorus] “Was it thee who lost this axe? 「この斧を落としたのですか?」 This axe of silver bright?” [chorus] The honest woodsman answered thus 正直な木こりはこう答えた “That is not the axe I own” 「それは私の斧ではありません」 The silver axe is fair indeed Yet rust and care would burden me Oil and whetstone day by day 油差しと研ぎ石が毎日欠かせない Unfit for hewing wood 木を伐る道具としては扱いづらい That is not the axe I own だからそれは私の斧ではありません [bridge] The goddess paused in troubled thought 女神は困ったように考え込み And silence filled the air Then from beneath the silver waves She drew an axe once more A pale and dimly shining blade 淡く鈍く光る刃 An axe of titanium それはチタンの斧だった [chorus] The honest woodsman answered thus 正直な木こりはこう答えた "Pure titanium tempts the heart” 「純チタンとは心惹かれますね」 Light and strong and free from rust 軽く、強く、錆びもしない Yet still too soft for cutting wood だがそれでも木を断つには柔らかい Softer than iron by a shade 鉄よりわずかに軟らかいのです [build-up] “Then tell me now 「では教えてください」 What gift would please?” 「あなたが望むものを」 At last the goddess asked of him ついに女神はそう尋ねた [final-chorus] The woodsman quietly replied 木こりは静かに答えた “Six parts aluminum 「アルミニウムを6%に And four of vanadium バナジウムを4% Then forge for me titanium alloy” それでチタン合金を打ってください」 Surely then そうすればきっと The finest axe twould be 最高の斧になるでしょう [outro] The goddess gazed upon the sky 女神は空を見上げ And breathed a weary sigh 疲れたようにため息をついた “No more shall I give trials like this...” 「もう二度と、こんな試練は与えません……」 So swore she in her heart 女神は心の中でそう誓った
