The Price of Everything

Coffee got smaller Rent got tall Everybody wants a little more For giving you less at all The bag ain't full But the price went up They took two ounces out the box And called it good enough Every time I turn around Somebody's reaching for my change Same old thing I bought last Tuesday Got a brand-new price today That's the price of everything A little more for everything Put a fee on the fee Then they tax the receipt That's the price of everything My money leaves before I do Don't even say goodbye I work all week to watch it disappear Lord knows that money can fly Filled my tank on Monday Blinked and half was gone Went inside to buy some eggs Had to put my glasses on I said, "There must be twelve in there" For what they're asking me Cashier said, "That's just six" I said, "Six better come with a degree" They got basic, plus and premium For things that used to come And every little convenience Got another charge tacked on That's the price of everything A little more for everything Put a fee on the fee Then they tax the receipt That's the price of everything My money leaves before I do Don't even say goodbye I work all week to watch it disappear Lord knows that money can fly Called somebody Tuesday Just to straighten out a bill Spent forty minutes holding And I'm listening to music still Then a voice said, "We appreciate you" I said, "That's mighty sweet" "If you appreciate me that much Take twenty dollars off this fee" They charge me for convenience They charge me for delay Charge me when I get it Charge me when I pay Pretty soon they'll meter sunshine Sell the breeze by degree Send a monthly statement Just for letting me breathe And it'll probably have an automatic renewal.
