Chiquita’s Swing ( Heart Songs with Dr. Ken )

For Chiquita (A San Francisco Love Song) She came to us small and sun-colored, tan and fawn like early light, four months old from the East Bay, a backyard beginning that somehow felt like fate. A Chihuahua mix, gentle and bright, we brought her home to help us live— and named Chaquita by Don, a name that stayed, soft as a promise. She loved to fetch, loved her walks, every day through the Castro streets, windows open, city breathing, tail spinning like a helicopter whenever joy found her. Puppy school, sit and stay, car rides and first-class flights, she crossed the ocean to South Wales, spent long summers in a quiet garden, watching the world grow green. She had a yappy bark, quick kisses, a heart bigger than her small frame, pure love moving easily through the rhythm of our days. She lived eighteen years— one hundred four in human time— a whole life folded gently into our own. She left too suddenly. She is missed—deeply—by Jack, missed by all of us who learned how to love better because of her. Love like hers doesn’t disappear. It stays close, lingers in familiar streets, tail still wagging, waiting softly just beyond our sight.
