Closet Footsteps (May 6th Contest Entry #2)

[Verse 1] I’m folded up in the dark Behind the hanging coats Hearing your front door slam Then the house hold its throat My boots pressed side by side My breath too loud, too fast I knew this would turn ugly I knew a lie won’t last Your ring on the dresser Your phone face-down and dim I should’ve walked away sooner Before I got in this [Pre-Chorus] Then I heard those steps Slow on the floor A hand on the handle And I knew the score No more excuses No more games A real love burns When you speak her name [Chorus] Don’t hide there Don’t lie there Tell the truth That’s the way Break that chain Stop that hurt Respect the bond Before it breaks Don’t hide there Don’t lie there Walk away Let it stay If it ain’t yours Let it be Morality Starts today [Verse 2] Her voice cut clean through me Like cold rain on tin “Who’s in my house?” And there I was in The worst little silence A man can ever wear Caught in a borrowed shadow With shame stuck in the air I heard his name said once Then nothing but the floor I could’ve made it uglier I could’ve begged for more But what I owed was simple I stood on the wrong side A sneaking heart is poison It eats you from inside [Pre-Chorus] Then I heard those steps Slow on the floor A hand on the handle And I knew the score No more excuses No more games A real love burns When you speak her name [Chorus] Don’t hide there Don’t lie there Tell the truth That’s the way Break that chain Stop that hurt Respect the bond Before it breaks Don’t hide there Don’t lie there Walk away Let it stay If it ain’t yours Let it be Morality Starts today [Bridge] I ain’t proud of that night I ain’t proud of me Some doors should stay shut For everybody’s peace If you want somebody Then be free, be clear Don’t build your want On somebody’s tears [Chorus] Don’t hide there Don’t lie there Tell the truth That’s the way Break that chain Stop that hurt Respect the bond Before it breaks Don’t hide there Don’t lie there Walk away Let it stay If it ain’t yours Let it be Morality Starts today
