Under the Ground
We went too far to turn around, The air went still, the fields bowed down, The leaves held tight, the roots held wrong— Like something hurt had waited long. I felt it first beneath my feet, A troubled pulse beneath the deep, No cry, no sign, no warning sound— Just something turning in the ground. Under the ground, under the root, Something restless coming through, Not with force, not with a sound— But wrongness moving through the ground. Then all at once the stems gave way, The vines shook loose, the insects came, Across the leaf, across the hand— Too fast to stop, too wide to stand. The boy moved first, without a word, He pulled me back through branch and burr, I knew the signs, but not the fight— And still they rose from out of sight. Under the ground, under the root, Something restless coming through, Not with force, not with a sound— But wrongness moving through the ground. No single field, no single scar, No single place where they all are, The land was hurting far too long— And now it showed us what was wrong. Not just here… All around…
