[Intro: soft piano, room ambience] [Spoken] Yesterday we walked everywhere. Today… [Pause] Absolutely not. [Verse 1: sleepy groove] My feet have filed a formal claim My knees refuse to play the game My calves are sending warning signs My back has unionized Yesterday was mile on mile Still somehow worth it all the while But morning came and every bone Said, “Please just leave us all alone” [Backing Vocals] Sit down Lie back Put those shoes away [Lead] The world can keep on moving I am staying here today [Chorus: warm guitars enter] NOT TODAY, FEET YOU’VE DONE ENOUGH Yesterday we asked you For entirely too much Let the muscles loosen Let the heartbeat slow There is nowhere that important We absolutely have to go Rest the body Clear the head Find a pillow Find a bed Yesterday we chased the world Today we let it come instead [Verse 2: playful bass] The couch has never looked so fine This blanket understands my mind A glass of water by my side And zero plans involving strides No step counter judging me No scenic route I need to see If something’s more than ten feet out [Backing Vocals] Delivery! [Lead] That’s what modern life is about [Pre-Chorus] Rest isn’t quitting Rest isn’t waste Sometimes recovery Is exactly the pace The body kept the promise Yesterday from dawn till night So today I’ll return the favor And treat the poor thing right [Chorus] NOT TODAY, FEET YOU’VE DONE ENOUGH Yesterday we asked you For entirely too much Let the muscles loosen Let the heartbeat slow There is nowhere that important We absolutely have to go [Bridge: drums drop, dreamy guitar] [Soft Vocal] Every adventure leaves a little bill A sore ankle A stiff hip A body asking us to sit still And maybe listening Is part of being alive You can’t keep running beautifully If you never stop the drive [Instrumental: gentle guitar flourish] [Final Chorus: fuller harmonies] NOT TODAY, FEET TAKE THE DAY OFF No heroic journeys No pretending we’re not soft Stretch a little Breathe it in Let recovery begin Tomorrow we can wander But today… [Music cuts] We’re staying in. [Outro: piano only] [Spoken] Feet? [Backing Vocals] Yes? [Lead] Thank you for your service. [Soft laughter] [Final chord]
