They called her a quack-healer, spoke ill of her craft, said she made the sick worse, brought sorrow, and defiled God’s grace. Then I swore revenge deep in my heart, cold and without mercy. [Verse 2] I wished to send hail upon the fields in blackened night, to shatter the grain beneath the ice and strike down all hope; yet rain came at the proper hour and gently soaked the land, the people went home rejoicing and praised the power of God. Cursed village — the next plan must be tried! [Chorus] Cursed be my success! I wished to harm, to curse, to compel. Whatever I work turns into healing — cursed village, I will try again now! witche’s curse witche’s curse witche’s curse witche’s curse [Verse 3] I sent envy and heart-born wrath into love and loyalty, so that hatred might part them and old grief be stirred; I wished for strife from a trifling word, great misery in the square, yet word met word, truth rang out, and anger lost its appeal. Cursed village — the next plan must be tried! [Verse 4] I sent the devil into the village with horns and fur, he crept by night from house to house and howled fiercely aloud; the people woke, leapt from their beds, screaming in terror, and in their foolish fright they truly caught a thief by chance. Cursed village — the next plan must be tried! [Verse 5] I brewed a draught of bitter herbs and gall full of sorrow, to bring fever, greater pain, and far-spread lament; I wished them now to say: “She has done this deed,” yet a child recovered, the body was freed, they called me wise thereafter. Cursed village — whatever I attempt, it will not work! [Bridge] “I wished you harm, distress, and grief!” I cried in anger, not without strife. They laughed aloud and said to me: “You bring healing wherever you draw near!” I tore the wreath from my head and cursed my fate — it helped me not at all. [Chorus 2] Cursed be my success: I wished for harm, yet must bring joy. Whatever I work turns into healing — so be my lot, I bear it now. witche’s curse witche’s curse witche’s curse witche’s curse
