Why Do I Stay

[INTRO] Sometimes you can see the storm coming and still stand outside. Not because you don’t know better… but because something about the rain still feels familiar. [VERSE 1] There’s a certain kind of smile that can make you forget the warning signs, a certain kind of touch that can make you leave your sense behind. One minute there’s a promise, next minute there’s an empty chair, and somehow you’re still waiting like somebody’s supposed to care. The night gets longer, the room gets colder, and the silence says enough. Then morning comes with footsteps like nothing ever went wrong. No questions, no explanations, just another chapter turning, and somehow I convince myself there’s still something worth learning. Maybe kindness has a shadow. Maybe giving has a price. Maybe some hearts keep opening even after they’ve been sliced. [PRE-CHORUS] I can see the smoke. I can feel the heat. I know there’s something dangerous standing right in front of me. So why do my feet stay frozen when every warning says to leave? Why does my heart keep reaching for what my mind says I don’t need? [CHORUS] Why do I stay when the door is wide open? Why do I wait on words that were never spoken? Why do I keep giving when the giving leaves me empty? Why does a little bit of attention make me forget what it cost me? Maybe I’m not chasing the pain. Maybe I’m chasing what it could become. Maybe I’m holding onto a moment while the future keeps coming undone. Why do I stay? Why do I stay? [VERSE 2] There were evenings dressed in expectation, plans that never made it past the night. A little hope sitting beside me, watching the clock under the light. Then the door would open eventually, and somehow yesterday disappeared. Just enough warmth to keep the winter out, just enough closeness to keep me near. I learned how easy it is to mistake crumbs for a feast when you’ve been hungry for somebody to finally give you peace. And maybe that’s the part nobody understands. It’s not always the money. It’s not always the promises. Sometimes it’s the feeling that if you stop giving, you’ll finally have to admit that you were giving to something that never planned to give back. [PRE-CHORUS] So I keep rearranging the furniture around the same old storm. Keep calling chaos temporary. Keep hoping cold hands will become warm. But how many times can a heart walk into the same fire before it understands the flames aren’t love? [CHORUS] Why do I stay when the door is wide open? Why do I wait on words that were never spoken? Why do I keep giving when the giving leaves me empty? Why does a little bit of attention make me forget what it cost me? Maybe I’m not chasing the pain. Maybe I’m chasing what it could become. Maybe I’m holding onto a moment while the future keeps coming undone. Why do I stay? Why do I stay? [VERSE 3] Maybe there’s something beautiful about seeing the good in someone. Maybe there’s something dangerous about believing you can become their sun. You can love the quiet side of somebody’s soul while never knowing what happens when they lose control. You can see the person they could be and forget the person standing there. You can call it patience. Call it understanding. Call it love. Anything but what it really is when your heart starts disappearing. And maybe the hardest truth isn’t about anybody else. Maybe it’s learning that being generous doesn’t mean being available for every hand that reaches. Maybe saying no isn’t cruelty. Maybe it’s a boundary. Maybe walking away isn’t giving up on somebody. Maybe it’s finally refusing to give up on yourself. [BRIDGE] I don’t want revenge. I don’t want another explanation. I don’t want another beautiful promise that disappears with the sunrise. I want peace. I want something that doesn’t leave me guessing. Something that doesn’t make me question my worth. Something that doesn’t require me to keep shrinking just to make somebody else comfortable. Because love shouldn’t feel like standing in front of a loaded sky hoping the lightning misses. [FINAL CHORUS] So why did I stay when the door was wide open? Why did I wait on words that were never spoken? Why did I keep giving until there was nothing left to give? Maybe I finally understand. Some people don’t have to destroy you to teach you a lesson. Sometimes they simply show you how important it is to protect what they couldn’t appreciate. And maybe this time the feet that wouldn’t move will finally remember they were never stuck. The door was always there. The choice was always mine. [OUTRO] No anger. No revenge. No more proving. Just a quiet room, an open door, and a heart finally asking itself a different question: Not… “Why don’t they love me the way I need?” But… “Why didn’t I love myself enough to leave sooner?” [LONG PAUSE] Polo Energy
