[Verse 1] You came by the bakery just after the rain With a paper-wrapped parcel and a flower for Jane The bus sighed away at the end of the street You tucked your cold fingers inside of my sleeve [Pre-Chorus] And the shop bells rang as we hurried along Past the old blue gate where the sparrows belong [Chorus] Come on, come on, the day is ours We’ll take the long way past the allotment flowers Come on, come on, don’t let it end You’re my best surprise, my very best friend [Verse 2] We shared out the cherries on a chipped china plate Your brother kept calling, but we made him wait A penny arcade and a postcard to send Then home by the river before half past ten [Pre-Chorus] And you laughed so hard that you dropped your glove I kept it safe like a small sign of love [Chorus] Come on, come on, the day is ours We’ll take the long way past the allotment flowers Come on, come on, don’t let it end You’re my best surprise, my very best friend [Bridge] If Monday comes knocking with its books and its rain We’ll save Sunday’s joke and tell it again [Chorus] Come on, come on, the day is ours We’ll take the long way past the allotment flowers Come on, come on, don’t let it end You’re my best surprise, my very best friend [Outro] Best friend, best friend You’re my best surprise, my very best friend
