To celebrate Tanabata, I decided to write a short Varigner side story and share it alongside an instrumental piece I created some time ago. This story takes place during the events of my side story, Fractured Harmony, between several of its battles. The English translation is included after the Japanese version of the story. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you as always for listening and reading! ---------- 🔹 English translation: 🔹 ⭐ Side Story: The Promise Beyond the Milky Way ⭐ The war had fallen strangely quiet. Not because peace had arrived. Only because both sides were too exhausted to continue fighting for one night. Far above the sleeping city, countless stars stretched across the sky like a silent river. Ryn stood alone on the Sky Deck, the observation platform overlooking Musicalis' main hangar. The night breeze gently stirred her long white hair and the flowing sleeves of her dress as she gazed toward the heavens. Below, maintenance lights bathed ORION in a soft glow. The black Varigner rested silently inside the hangar, its armor still marked by the scars of recent battles. For the first time in days, the only sound was the distant hum of the city. "...Beautiful." The quiet hiss of the access door broke the silence. Without turning around, Ryn smiled ever so slightly. "I thought I'd find you here." The door closed gently behind him. ONE walked to the railing beside her, slipping his hands into his jacket pockets before looking up at the same sky. "I could say the same." For a while, neither of them spoke. The silence between them had never felt uncomfortable. After everything they had been through, silence had become another way of talking. Ryn remained quietly gazing at the river of stars above. "...Why do you think people make wishes when they look at the stars?" ONE looked up at the endless sky, thinking for a moment. "...Maybe..." His eyes followed the faint glow of the Milky Way stretching across the heavens. "...Because they hope someone is listening." For a heartbeat, Ryn simply looked at him. Then, a soft laugh escaped her lips. Not one of amusement, but one born from quiet warmth. "...That's a beautiful answer." The corners of ONE's mouth lifted almost imperceptibly. "I'm not sure it was the right one." Ryn gently shook her head. "I don't think there is a right answer." "I think... everyone carries their own reason." Another quiet silence settled between them. Then she spoke, almost as if sharing a treasured memory. "Would you let me tell you the story I once heard?" ONE turned to her and gave a small nod. "...I'd like that." Ryn looked back toward the River of Stars. "It's an old legend." "They say that once every year, beyond the River of Stars, two people separated by the heavens are finally able to meet." "...Just once?" ONE asked quietly. Ryn nodded. "Just once." The silence between them returned, gentle and unhurried. "...Then how did they know the other never gave up?" he finally asked. Ryn's eyes remained fixed on the stars. "No one really knows." "Some believed that every wish made beneath the stars found its way across the River of Stars." She smiled softly. "Others believed that songs could travel farther than light." ONE looked at her. "...Because you sing?" A quiet laugh escaped Ryn once more. She gently shook her head. "...Because songs reach places we can't." The wind carried her words away into the night. After a long pause, she continued. "But I don't think the promise was ever about meeting again." ONE turned slightly toward her. "...No?" "I think..." She looked toward the endless sky, where the Milky Way shimmered above them. "...it was about believing." "As long as both of them looked up at the same sky..." "...neither of them let go of the other." Neither of them spoke. The River of Stars flowed silently above. Below them, ORION rested beneath the lights of the hangar, waiting for another dawn and another battle. The night breeze gently lifted the long sleeves of Ryn's dress, their graceful movements echoing the quiet current of stars overhead. ONE's gaze remained fixed upon the heavens. "...That's a difficult promise." Ryn nodded. "It is." She looked up at the River of Stars once more. "...Because every day, you choose to believe again." Silence returned once more. But this time, it no longer felt empty. Above them, the River of Stars continued its endless journey across the heavens. As if quietly carrying one more promise beyond the Milky Way.
